Better or Worse? A look at Montreal
Better or Worse? A look at Montreal

filed under: NHL, Montreal Canadiens
As we count down the days until the opening of training camps, I've decided to play a fun game of "Better or Worse?" In the coming weeks, I'll look at each team (in alphabetical order) and give you my opinion about whether it will be better or worse in the coming season, based on what it has done in the offseason. This isn't meant to be a complete preview. I'll leave that for the fall.
Montreal Canadiens (42-34-6): Better.
The Canadiens' summer moves, and there have been several of them, seem like a wash to me. Still, I think they'll be a little better than the 90-point, non-playoff team they were last season because of their group of goaltenders.
Returning starter Cristobal Huet (.916 save percentage) was an All-Star before suffering a hamstring injury in February. He missed 21 of the club's final 23 games. Rookie Jaroslav Halak (.906) came up from the minors and outplayed veteran backup Dave Aebischer, who has since left for Phoenix via free agency. In that short stint, the 22-year-old Halak showed some promise.
At training camp, Huet and Halak will get some serious competition from 20-year-old Carey Price, who was the Habs' top pick (fifth overall) in the 2005 draft. Price wowed club management and just about everyone watching his play during the AHL playoffs. With just two AHL regular-season games under his pads, Price led the Hamilton Bulldogs to the Calder Cup crown. During the postseason, he compiled a 15-6 mark with a 2.06 goals-against average and an impressive .936 save percentage.
These three goalies give the Canadiens nice depth at the critical position.
As for their moves, GM Bob Gainey wanted to make some big ones. The club made significant pitches for free agents Daniel Briere and Ryan Smyth, but couldn't land either player.
In the end, Gainey's biggest free-agent acquisition was defenseman Roman Hamrlik. The 33-year-old Czech spent the past two seasons in Calgary. Last season, he put up 38 points and was a plus-22. The Canadiens hope he'll be a more consistent defender than Sheldon Souray, who left for Edmonton via free agency. Souray's departure certainly will leave a big hole in the club's top-rated power-play unit.
Veteran defenseman Patrice Brisebois returns to Montreal for a second stint with the club after spending the past two seasons in Denver. Brisebois and journeyman free agent Jamie Rivers figure to be depth additions for the Canadiens.
Up front, the club was able to find a taker for unproductive and unhappy winger Sergei Samsonov, sending him to Chicago for defenseman Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmelainen. Then, he bought out both newcomers, letting them leave via free agency. In essence, the deal allowed the Canadiens to save some cash. It would have cost a little more to buy out Samsonov's deal as opposed to both Cullimore and Salmelainen's contracts.
The Canadiens added veteran center Bryan Smolinski and 28-year-old role player Tom Kostopoulos. The team also signed 6-foot-2, 196-pound Janne Lahti, 24, from the Finnish League. Those three players will have a chance to replace ex-Habs Radek Bonk, Mike Johnson and Alexander Perezhogin.
Gainey and Co. wanted to make a bigger splash during the summer. It didn't happen. Still, I think their goaltending depth gives them a chance to exceed expectations in the new season.

I think Montreal got better defensively, but are weaker in the power play. However, the team has so many young talents that one can hope that the replacement will come from there. Sourey will be missed for his strong shot, but not for his defensive play. The team tried to sign Briere but it didn't work out. It would have made the team a lot better. But the present team is not better on paper, but I expect the young players to make the difference.

RE: Better or Worse? A look at Montreal
They have a good foundation to build on, but not quite a playoff team just yet. They will battle for the bottom playoff spot and probably fall just short of it landing in the 9th-11th place zone. If they make a deadline deal they could show up in the playoffs, but it's not worth the high pick or prospect(s) at this point since they definitely won't make it past the first round.
All in all.. not really better or worse. But looking good for the future. Keep building, Montreal. A splash in next year's FA pool could be just the trick to contend in the near future.

I think that getting rid of Souray and his minus-1,000 (okay, an exaggeration) can only help Montreal. I wouldn't be surprised to see them slip into the post season as a low seed. On the other hand, I also wouldn't be surprised to see them just barely miss the post season by a few points. Regardless, things are looking up (ever so slightly) in Montreal these days...

a healthy Huet, addition of Hamrlik, and the subtraction of Souray will lead to another sound defense by Montreal this year. however, they really needed Briere this year. they don't have a major spark plug in their offense and that will prevent them from getting anything higher than 7th seed, if they can even achieve that. didn't Saku Koivu slip up last month and say something like the Canadiens aren't good enough to win the Cup? I'd have to agree 100% with that statement.

Yeah but then he back peddled and said that once the playoffs start, it's a whole new season...which is really true...but in no way do I see Montreal even getting to the Conference Finals this season.

RE: Better or Worse? A look at Montreal
I think the only upside to this year for Montreal is, that Carey Price could become the starting goalie, or at least back-up, a one two punch in net would be great, and I mean, Huet is good anyways. Hamrlik...I don't know if he's an upgrade from Souray, I could see him being a big upset to the Montreal fans. Smolinski, is just a medicore player, who plays alright, all around, upside...I think theire younger fella's could have pulled off what he is being brought there for.
I think in Montreal this year, it all depends on how well their younger guys have developed. Or....how much trade value some of their younger guys have. haha

RE: Better or Worse? A look at Montreal
Kinda late on this thread but.....I think that they will be better this season due to speed. Lots of youngsters that can fly combined with a solid defense that can break the puck out with decent passing out of the zone. They have great goalies no matter who is playing. So long as they don't catch the flu again, I smell a 6th place finish. But, thats the opinion of a Habs fan.
