Boston will undergo majors changes

They need to start building a strong young team. The absence of Thornton makes Boston a totally differnet and weaker team. They need to build around Bergeron and Thomas by adding young prospects for a better future of the franchise.

Quote:
With the season nearing its end, the Boston Bruins are expected to blow up the current version of their team and start rebuilding, reports the Montreal Gazette.

General manager Mike O'Connell is already gone, but head coach Mike Sullivan might survive.

According to the Gazette, with Tim Thomas signed to a long-term deal, 2003-04 rookie of the year Andrew Raycroft is as good as gone. Various reports have suggested that he will be traded this summer, with the Edmonton Oilers drawing the most interest.

Meanwhile, unrestricted free agents Hal Gill and Mariusz Czerkawski are both expected to leave the Bruins, and the team will attempt to buy out the contract of center Alexei Zhamnov. The Gazette also suggests winger Glen Murray will beg to be traded.

THE problem : THE trade

A GM should learn from other's mistakes.
The Bruins made the same mistake the Habs did when they traded Roy. In other words, trading a franchise player for 3 OK players. Roy was traded to Colorado for Thibault, Rucinsky and Kovalenko. Montreal was a big loser in that trade. Colorado laughed its way to the cup. And believe me, the cup won by the Avalanche with Roy was all about the goaltender.

Same scenario in Boston. The Bruins wanted to trade Thornton, a franchise player about to win the Art Ross as the top point scorer in the league. What do they get? 3 OK players. San Jose is laughing its way into the playoffs as one of the hottest team in the West. Boston is looking like a team which will be rebuilding for the next 2-3 years. Oh well, as long as Sinden is pulling the strings in Boston...

By the way Mr. Sinden, look at what smart GM's do when they want to trade franchise players. Top performers like Danny Heatley and Marian Hossa get swapped. Both teams are winners. Ottawa has found its missing piece to win the cup and the Trashers are having a solid year, still in the hunt for a playoff spot in mid-April.

In my opinion Boston has too many young players. You need a few good veterans in the mix to help with both play and mentoring the newer guys.

RE: Boston will undergo majors changes

Don't really think Boston can build around 31 year old Tim Thomas. Hannu Toivonen is going to be a star.

They need a change, however I think that they should, build around Bergeron and Boyes.

They can't build a team completely or nearly completely on UFAs ..

That's what they tried last year, and it doesn't work. Cap room doesn't equal a good team.

What about Glen Murray? He was pretty useless without Joe to pass him the pucks...I'm not sure about his contract situation, but he could be a good fit on a younger team (Wash?) to work with their young power forwards (like Fehr)...

Is it feasible to think he'll be bought out? Is his contract small enough to allow him to be tradeable?

RE: Boston will undergo majors changes

accourding to nhlpa.com hes contract is worth 4,150,000 per season. it doesint say how long is left but with that heavy of a contract after a not so great season he will most likley be bought out if he is going to move unless a team is willing to take that contract.
