Bouwmeester pleads guilty to DUI charges

Quote:
Florida Panthers defenceman Jay Bouwmeester pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges in an Edmonton Provincial Court on Tuesday.

He was given a one-year driving probation and a $1,000 fine.

Bouwmeester was arrested on Aug. 12, 2006 near a Whyte Avenue bar in Edmonton's nightclub area, and was charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of more than .08.

The 23-year-old was set to go to trial in June after entering a plea of not guilty.

However, Bouwmeester's defence lawyer and the Crown prosecutor agreed to have the trial adjourned to Sept. 4 for summary disposition - where the accused agree to plead guilty.

The Edmonton native was chosen third overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and was awarded a two-year, $4.35 million contract in July.

RE: Bouwmeester pleads guilty to DUI charges

Jay didn't plead guilty to DUI. I think it was driving while impared.

Anyway, I was bummed when I read this last night. Jay is the nicest - most down to earth player. Not to mention he is my favorite player.

That is unfortunate for Bouwmeester who could be a future Norris Trophy winner. I expect Bouwmeester to put this behind him, and he will have a good season.

RE: Bouwmeester pleads guilty to DUI charges

kind of funny to think what hockey players can get away with in the media when if a football player did this, it would be a big hassle and ESPN would be talking about it for days.

didn't an NHL player get suspended last year at the end of the season/playoffs for testing positive for steroids? you think that would raise a flag in the media, but i guess the NHL can thank their lucky stars that no one in the US cares too much about them or else they could soon have a witch hunt like in the MLB.
