Briere signs with Flyers

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers made a big splash to kick off the offseason, signing centre Daniel Briere to an eight-year contract worth $52 million.

The deal will average $6.5 million a season against the salary cap, with the first year paying him $10 million. The contract also features a no movement clause.

$10M!!! WOW! I guess thats one way to get a FA to come to you. I suppose if you have a lot of cap space available this year its better to put a lot of money up front and then have more room in the future (similar to a long time ago when Federov got like $15M in one season then the next 3 or 4 years he only had a $2M contract with the Wings). Philly's GM is making some shrewd moves, but I think it'll work out in the end.

Yeah i know. That is a lot. I think he is rich Smile

He must be super happy. He better not spend it all.

What has been the largest one-year contract in the NHL? Federov wiht $15?

I'd think the largest single year payday was for Federov. The Federov deal was for over $15M (I think it was $18M actually). It was a long time ago when he was a RFA and Carolina gave him a ridiculous offer sheet that had a clause where if his team reaches the conference finals (Carolina sucked, so they'd never even reach the playoffs. the clause was supposed to stop the Wings from matching the offer), then he gets a $10M or $15M bonus up front instead of averaged over his contract. Obviously, the Wings matched the deal and ended up winning the Cup that year, I think. The deal was supposed to be for $5M a year, but since the Wings triggered the bonus clause, Federov ended up getting like $18M up front and the rest of his contract averaged $2M/year.

Quote:
After a lengthy holdout to start the 1997-1998 season, Fedorov, a restricted free-agent, was offered a contract by the Carolina Hurricanes worth up to $38 million (with bonuses). The Red Wings matched the offer on February 26, 1998, ending Fedorov's holdout. The offer broke down as: $14 million for signing, $2 million for 21 regular season games, $12 million for the team reaching conference finals. $28 million for 43 total games in 1997-98 is the largest single season amount paid to an NHL athlete. Fedorov helped the Red Wings win their second consecutive Stanley Cup that year.

If I am reading this right. It says he earned $28 million?

I guess I forgot about the signing bonus Rofl1

but yea, you're reading it right. Carolina really wanted to sign Fedorov and tried to make the deal as ridiculous as possible so that Detroit wouldn't match it. what they forgot was that detroit's owner is mike "i own little caesar's and the detroit tigers" illitch, so money was no object for him.

Wow.. That accually crazy wow...

Well still that is like nothing compared to MLB players where a lot of base-ball players get paid like over $20 million(mostly all Yank's too (ie. Arod, Rocket, Jeter, Giambi, Wells).

RE: Briere signs with Flyers

I'm happy with the Flyers signing and trade today. I'm pretty sure that the cap hit is the average of the salary so it will be 6.5 per year. I think the trade getting Smith and Lupul is even better than the signing of Briere. Looking like they will be much improved over last year.

RE: Briere signs with Flyers

Hopefully, Lupul won't feel the amount of pressure he did in Edmonton. I'm guessing thats part of the problem he had. He was the key part of the Pronger deal and when he came over, everyone expected him to get 30+ goals right away.
