Canadiens Aaron Downey in hospital with concussion after Regehr hit
MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal Canadiens winger Aaron Downey was in hospital Tuesday night with a severe concussion after taking an open ice hit from Calgary Flames defenceman Robyn Regehr.
"He'll stay overnight (at Montreal General Hospital) and we'll see how he feels," said head coach Guy Carbonneau. "It's a pretty bad concussion."
Downey crossed the red line with his head down and was dropped by a thundering shoulder check from Regehr 3:38 into the Canadiens 5-4 victory at the Bell Centre.
He lay motionless on the ice for a minute, but later was able to get up and looked wobbly as he was helped off the ice.
"I wanted to try to make a good clean hit on him," said Regehr, who was not penalized. "He was trying to get the red line to make a dump-in and I saw my opportunity to close in on him.
"I just put the shoulder to him. I hit him right on the button. I hope he's not hurt seriously. For me, in my position, I'm supposed to be physical. I'm pretty sure it was clean."

Ouch, Sounds like it hurt. I hope i can see the hit on SportsCentre tonight.

I seen the hit, was clean but my god it was brutal. That should teach young kids to keep their heads up.

Downey had been called for charging for a less dramatic hit in the previous game against Ottawa. But I'm Aaron Downey. I'm a slug. I'm a hard-working guy, a fighter in this league and that's the way it is. There's a double standard. If I was a superstar like Saku (Koivu) or Vinny Lecavalier or someone like that he would have got kicked out of the game and maybe he would have got a couple of games suspension. They would have looked at it closer."
The Canadiens won't play Calgary again this season, but Downey said he has filed it away in his memory.
"He's lucky I didn't get up or I would have pounded him," he said.
