Canadiens and Michael Ryder avoid arbitration with one-year deal
MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens and right-winger Michael Ryder avoided arbitration by agreeing to a US$2.95-million, one-year contract Sunday.
Ryder's hearing was set for Monday in Toronto. He made US$2.2 million last season.
The Canadiens now have all their players under contract for 2007-08.
Ryder played in all 82 games last season, led the team with 30 goals and added 28 assists to go with 60 penalty minutes.
The native of Bonavista, N.L., has 176 points (85 goals, 91 assists) in 244 career NHL games since making his debut in 2003-04.

RE: Canadiens and Michael Ryder avoid arbitration with one-year deal
It's the same story every year with Ryder. Next year, I think he will be a UFA. The reason is that the he started late in the NHL, so the team wanted to test his abilities on a year by year basis. Ryder is a unidimensional player, i.e. knows only how to score goals, but not a great passer or defender. People claim that he scores goals because he plays on the first line, and don't like the fact that he's -20 something in the +/- stats. I think he's a good asset for the Habs, but he needs to have more heart, and improve his defence a lot.

Ryder will be better next year and when he becomes a free agent he can join the Maple Leafs and teach Montreal a lesson by scoring on them every game

Michael Ryder is a big deal here in Newfoundland, seeing as how he is a 30 goal scorer in he NHL, and we get lots of new on him. He was a big Habs fan when he was growing up, and if that's the case, no matter how much he hates management there, I don't believe he'll ever be a leaf...sadly, I don't really care about his lack of defense, I think Paul Maurice could fix that up, I mean he made Pohl and Battaglia consistent, he can definately help ol' Ryder out.

thats a great analysis. I personally couldn't care that he can score 30g a year when his poor defensive play probably causes a lot of goals against. He reminds me a lot of Anson Carter, another overrated 30g scorer who can't do anything unless someone sets him up.

I guess he might be decent trade bait for Montreal come the trades.
