Cloutier clears waivers

Cloutier was waived on Friday and has now cleared waivers,

Quote:
The Los Angeles Kings goaltender Dan Cloutier cleared waivers on Saturday with the Kings intention of sending him to Manchester of the AHL.

Cloutier struggled with injuries last season, missing 44 games with a hip injury. The Kings reportedly want Cloutier to recover fully from his injuries in the minors.

The difficulty arises for the Kings that Cloutier will have to clear re-entry waivers if Los Angeles chooses to recall him at any point during the season. Another team would be able to claim Cloutier at half of his salary with the Kings covering the other half.

The Kings had hoped that Cloutier would be the answer between the pipes when they acquired him in July of 2006 for a pair of draft picks. He finished the season with a record of 6-14-2 with an .860 save percentage.

The former Canucks netminder was expected to challenge for the number one goaltender spot this season with the Kings but has been outplayed in the pre-season by junior eligible netminder Johnathan Bernier who shone for Canada at the Summit Series.

RE: Cloutier clears waivers

Anybody believe the Kings are legitimately trying to rehab him? With him in the AHL and not counting against the cap they are free to shoot for an FA like CuJo, as long as they don't mind still paying Cloutier out of pocket.

Anyone know how the finances in LA look? Is there a surplus to allow for this?

I think that L.A. might be pretty close to it's personal cap, but I really have no idea.

RE: Cloutier clears waivers

Cap space isn't the issue. With Cloutier in the AHL he is off their cap numbers. I was asking about their actual profit margins. Cloutier isn't counting against their cap but he is still getting his paycheck.

If they have the extra cash, they may be interested in picking up an FA goalie. If they get somebody decent like CuJo, they have a very real shot at making the playoffs. This could rekindle interest in Los Angeles hockey and win some of the fairweather fans back from Anaheim, which could be worth the extra finances in the long run. An NHL team is still a business, after all, and LA has been losing fans (aka consumers) by the boatload for years.

RE: Cloutier clears waivers

I don't think they have to worry about another team picking up Cloutier coming up from the minors. If someone does sign him, they'll only be helping the Kings by taking more money off their salary.
