Don Cherry
Don Cherry is probably not the most skilled old player, but he's for sure one of the most Controversial ones. Below is what I found interesting about his life:
Cherry has never held back his dislike of the European style of hockey, blaming them for bringing diving, stickworks and visors into the league, while taking the jobs of "good-old Canadian boys."
Cherry's commentary is usually peppered with catch phrases like "All you kids out there...," unrestrained affection for his favorite players (including "Dougie," Kingston native Doug Gilmour, whom Cherry kissed on-air in a famous TV gag), and overall political incorrectness. Another trademark is his bull terrier Blue, originally a gift from the Bruins players.
Cherry is generally regarded as being an outspoken conservative on many issues, making him often at odds with the overall tone of CBC programming, which is generally characterized as liberal-leaning. In 2003 Cherry made controversial comments on his CBC segment in support of the 2003 invasion of Iraq (though many felt he was provoked by Ron MacLean on the issue). On an American radio program (The Jim Rome Show) the following week, he lashed out at CBC management for being anti-American.
In January, 2004 Cherry once again was at the center of a controversy, this time over comments he made about use of visors by NHL players. His statement that the majority of people that wear them were "European or French [Canadian] guys" triggered an investigation by the federal Official Languages Commissioner, and protests by French-Canadians. CBC consequently imposed a seven-second delay on Hockey Night in Canada. He was somewhat vindicated when a study was published that showed the majority of visor users in the NHL were indeed French-Canadians and Europeans.
All hockey fans know about his Controversial comment about French speaking players wearing eye protectors...I don't agree with him, but him getting so much attention from the media and the fans means that he had and has a big influence on our hockey.

RE: Don Cherry
I appreciate him, even though I'M french canadian. Lot of the things he say makes no sense, or shouldn't be say on TV, but he entertain people, and thats his job. If I want to talk seriously with an open-monded person, I would talk to a scientist or something like that !

Don does say some harsh things... that I know he doesn't regret though.. but... He's still an amazing HNIC guy. I would love to meet him over Gretzkey or Lemieux or Heatley anyday.

RE: Don Cherry
^haha, 3 offensive powerhouses and a gritty AHL'er, I think Don's the odd man out on that one. But I like Don Cherry, I don't consider myself to be bias, but I like "good Canadian boys" who just want to play the game then someone like Kovalchuk taunting a rookie (it may have been Crosby, but still, lol). I prefer to watch Canadian hockey over European and it's nice to know I got a mouthpiece who gets primetime airtime to agree with me, lol.

RE: Don Cherry
Don Cherry Speaks his mind, and doesn't beat around the bush. He tells it how it is, and I couldn't argee more with him. He's the mouthpiece of everything right in professional hockey and I back him 100%.
