Elias with NJ for 7 more years!
The most sought-after forward in the NHL's free agent pool is staying in New Jersey.
Patrik Elias has signed a seven-year, $42 million contract to remain a New Jersey Devil.
Elias, 30, was believed to be looking for a new contract that would pay him the league maximum of $8.8 million US, or 20 percent of the cap.
The Czech winger had 16 goals and 29 assists in 38 games last season after returning from a long battle with hepatitis.
More to follow.

Damn, 7 years for 6 mill a season, by the time this contract is over he will be 37, i dont know if he is going to be able to keep his skills that far into the contract, i think age will catch up around the 5th year of this monster contract

Well I know that NY wanted to keeop him around but damn.
That is goign to bite them, because he will lose some of his speed and skill, then they will porbaly have to trade him to get rid of his contract.
But even still i don't he would have resigned, I thought he was goign to the Canadiens for sure.

wow. that's a shocker to me. personally, i've never heard of a 7-year deal in the nhl for a player (or any other sport for that matter). the question will come up later down the road of whether or not he can still play well when he's in his mid-30's. injuries may arise or he might not be playing as well as he used to and the devils would have to look at trading him or something else.

Just recently the Islanders signed Dipietro to a 15 year deal. 7 year deals are pretty common in the NBA and there are deals like A-Rod in baseball with his 10 year $250mil. contract. I think a 7 year deal for elias is a good move for the Devils. It seems like the salary cap will increase over that 7 year period so Elias will probably not be that close to max salary by the time the end of his contract comes around.

Ah. I could have seen this coming. Elias had an amazing last part of the season with the Devils last year, and he is vital to the team's success. Just remember the Devil's "depression" during midseason with Elias out with an injury. He really is vital to the team. I hope the Devils get one more cup before Marty gets to thinking of retiring.
