Fitzpatrick in 2nd in all star voting

Rory Fitzpatrick is now in second
NEW YORK (CP) - Rory Fitzpatrick is on the verge of becoming an NHL all-star.
Fitzpatrick, a journeyman defenceman with the Vancouver Canucks, is second in voting among Western Conference blue-liners in results released Wednesday by the league. Fitzpatrick has 428,832 votes, trailing only Anaheim Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer (447,502).
Should Fitzpatrick remain in the top two by the time voting ends Jan. 2, he will earn a spot in the all-star game as a write-in candidate with just nine goals and 18 assists in 229 career NHL games.
The movement to send Fitzpatrick to the all-star game Jan. 24 in Dallas began with a fan website. The phenomenon has since found its way into print and TV media, vaulting the unheralded Fitzpatrick ahead of all-star veterans Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit (427,364), Chris Pronger of Anaheim (340,941) and Sergei Zubov of Dallas (172,334).
Fitzpatrick has yet to record a point in 19 games this season, returning to the lineup Dec. 14 after missing over a month with a broken bone in his left ankle.
San Jose Sharks teammates Joe Thornton (535,134) and Patrick Marleau (368,827) lead forwards in voting, with Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche (363,720) in third. Another Shark, reigning Maurice Richard winner Jonathan Cheechoo (335,960), is fourth.
Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames (284,260) rounds out the top five.
Lidstrom, Pronger and San Jose's Scott Hannan (333,610) sit third, fourth and fifth in defenceman voting. Flames second-year banger Dion Phaneuf (317,576) is sixth.
Vancouver Canucks netminder Roberto Luongo (367,528) holds down top spot in goaltender voting. Calgary Flames star Miikka Kiprusoff (296,186) and Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars (294,762) are second and third, respectively.

RE: Fitzpatrick in 2nd in all star voting
I didn't vote for Fitzpatrick.
If the league is going to continue to have the fans vote in the players for this game it shouldn't be called the All-Star game. It should be called the 'fan favorite game' or the 'team with the most fans with no life who can sit at a computer and continuously vote for their teams players game'.
I think the league should change it to either all the players are voted in or all the players are picked by the NHL.

I voted for him around 100 times. Yes I do have a life.
He works hard, and people who work hard without skill rarely get noticed. I think its great if he gets in.

but thats the thing... the all stars isnt about how hard you work... its about how skillful you are! and as you said Fitz isnt skillfull so i see it hard why he should get in!
the guy who started this whole voteforrory.com thing is an idiot! fitz isnt the best defenseman out there, i wouldnt even put him in the top 20 defenseman in the west, he has yet to record a point this season, and only has 19 shots, less that a shot a game, so why does he deserve an all star apperance? in my opinion, he doesnt, and so im not seen as biased! two canucks id much rather see in the allstars is mattias ohlund and sami salo! they both deserve spots because they are skilled and unlike fitzpatrick have scored and shoot in a game!

For these people who vote for him, what is he supposed to do at the skills competition? Maybe he can drive the zamboni.

This is an absolute disgrace.
Even if you don't like the All-Star game, think of poor Rory. He is now completely aware that he is nothing but a joke to these "fans".
I'm sure he is a good enough person that if he is voted into the starting line-up he will step down and give his spot to the runner-up.
At least I hope so.
Shame on you "fans".

RE: Fitzpatrick in 2nd in all star voting
The thing I dislike most about this is that I've seen Fitzpatrick wearing a 'Vote for Rory' shirt. If it just happened that he was a fan favorite and happened to get voted in that would be fine. It seems like he is almost campaigning to get into the all-star game. I've seen interviews with him and he said he thinks he will go if he is voted in. He has talked with teammates and players around the league and they think it's great.
Idon't care that he is ahead of guys like pronger or lidstrom becuase it's not their spot he's taking, those guys will still go to the game. IT will be someone like Liles from Colorado or Boucher from Dallas that will miss who actually deserve to go to their first and possibly only all-star game.
Don Cherry who hates the all-star game says that Rory is a jerk if he goes, I don't think he's a jerk but he would not be showing much class.
