Former 'Canes star Ron Francis joins club as director of player development

Quote:
RALEIGH, N.C. (CP) - Former Carolina captain Ron Francis is joining the Hurricanes front office.

The team named him director of player development Friday.

Francis, the NHL's second all-time leading scorer, will work with and assess players in the club's system and report to director of pro scouting Marshall Johnston.

"Ron's knowledge of the game of hockey and his experience as a player go without mention," Jim Rutherford, Hurricanes president and general manager, said in a statement. "Having Ron in this role will be a true benefit to the players and the Hurricanes organisation."

Francis, who retired before the 2005-06 season, is the franchise leader in almost every offensive category, including goals (382), assists (793), points (1,175) and power-play goals (132).

In 1,731 career regular-season games with Hartford/Carolina, Pittsburgh and Toronto, Francis recorded 549 goals and 1,249 for 1,798 points. He also won two Stanley Cups with the Penguins.

The Hurricanes officially retired Francis' No. 10 jersey on Jan. 28, 2006.

Francis was always so under-rated as a player, he never seems to get attention. However, the organization will benifit from this move.

They've been offering him this job since his retirement but up until this point he passed because he wanted to spend time with his family. Good to see him back and involved with the team again.

Jim made a great hire. Who better to help mold our young talent than argueably the most significant person to ever lace up a pair of skates for the organization and one of the greatest players that played the game. Ten years ago, Ronnie became our biggest hockey ambassador and helped usher in this great game to my fellow southern sports fans, doing so with such prestige. He was a great player on the ice, but more importantly he was a great guy off the ice and the embodiment of what a teams looks for in their respective captains. I'm sure the older guys will once again enjoy his presence, just as much as our newcomers eventually will.
