Hasek signs with wings
One year deal. No salary listed but there are probably bonuses available if he can stay healthy and play well. Right now I'm gonna say this is a bad move because of his recent injury history but he could prove me wrong. If he can stay healthy for a whole season it'll be all good.

Hasek to return to Wings
July 31, 2006
Dominik Hasek is returning for a third tour of duty with the Detroit Red Wings.
The team announced Monday it has signed the 41-year-old to a one-year deal, believed to be worth about $500,000 plus incentives.
Hasek first played for the Wings in 2001-02, when his stint culminated with a Stanley Cup party. He retired that same summer, only to de-retire two years later and ask to come back – even though the Wings had starting goaltender Curtis Joseph under contract for $8 million, not to mention a backup in Manny Legace. But had the Wings not accepted Hasek’s demand to return, he would have become an unrestricted free agent, meaning he was free to sign with any rival.
The Wings brought Hasek back, but Hasek soon injured his groin, and he ended up playing only 14 games. His enduring presence around the locker room caused tension, however, and Hasek and Joseph hardly ever spoke. Hasek’s contract expired that summer, which coincided with the start of the NHL lockout.
Hasek went on to sign with Ottawa last summer and looked like a Vezina Trophy candidate until he got hurt. He went to the Torino Winter Games and suffered a groin injury during the first game, and never played another game.
So why did the Wings go after him? Well, they tried for Ed Belfour – also 41, and with a back history to equal Hasek’s groin history – but balked when he wanted too much in incentives. Belfour eventually signed with Florida, and the Wings weren’t heartbroken.
They considered some of the other goalies available, like Buffalo’s Martin Biron, San Jose with either Vesa Toskala or Evgeni Nabokov, or Anaheim’s Jean-Sebastien Giguere. But any one of those players would have had to be acquired via trade, costing the Wings both a player and money. Hasek, on the other hand, only cost money.
And should he get injured, the Wings will have cap room to acquire a goalie via a trade.
Coincidentally, Hasek will have as a backup the guy he bumped in 2001: Chris Osgood. The Wings ended up having to put Osgood on waivers that year, and the New York Islanders claimed him. Osgood signed a two-year deal earlier this summer worth $900,000 a season, with the understanding that he was to be the backup.
The Wings feel comfortable with him in that role, because he has proved to management he can handle the pressure of being playoff goalie in Detroit – but all along, the Wings wanted another veteran as starter.
Hasek will now fill that role, leaving prospect Jimmy Howard to mature for another season in Grand Rapids.

RE: Hasek signs with wings
i just read about hasek signing with the red wings on the ticker running news thing on espn. i'm not sure what to think about this signing - i'm glad the red wings found a goalie but i don't think hasek should be playing anymore.

RE: Hasek signs with wings
What happened to Manny. It wasn't his fault the wings lost again in the first round. Wings had no offence. Maybe NYI can get Manny for a back-up

RE: Hasek signs with wings
Legace doesn't want to play there and it doesn't surprise me. He didn't play great but the team in front of him didn't score enough either. He was made the scapegoat and was ripped in the media. He needs a change of scenery. It's not like there are a lot of teams looking for starters at this point so he may just have to accept a backup role if he wants to play.

Hasek in not a sure value. He can still play well, but I think that being very fragile makes your system very fragile too. The Sens got used to him, and then he got injured in the playoffs and you know what happened afterwards...

He didn't get injured in the playoffs. He hurt his groin in the olympics and what was supposed to be a minor injury turned into a season ending one.

Kind of my feelings as well. I thought he retired all those years ago because he was done. Now he keeps coming back again and again.
I am sure he is hoping for a Cup, but I don't know if he still has it in him, and I am not sure the Red Wings have it in them either.

RE: Hasek signs with wings
I always thought of Hasek as overrated. He had such an underrated defense infront of him in Buffalo, he played for the Detroit Hall-of-Famers on ice, and the Ottawa Senators who are unbeatable when there is no pressure. I find it amazing that Hasek is the one goalie (although I guess Osgood kind of did) to escape the wrath of Detroit. It's something about this team and netminders (Vernon, Osgood, CuJo, Legace, Hasek x 3). His style (or lack there of) is just going to get him hurt again. He keep throwing himself around like that at his age and expect to play the regular season and playoffs.
