Hossa could command big return

Quote:
If Marian Hossa isn't locked up to a new deal by the Feb. 26 trade deadline, the Thrashers would trade him for a large package, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Thrashers GM and head coach Don Waddell would rather sign Hossa to a contract extension over trading him, but he's preparing for what many believe is inevitable.

According to the paper, Waddell's meetings this week and next with his pro and amateur scouts will help make sure the organization is prepared if a trade has to be made.

"The good thing is, in the next three or four weeks, we'll know which direction we're headed," Waddell told the paper. "We'll be prepared for whatever we'll try to do."

Two separate sources told TFP this week if the Thrashers trade Hossa, their first preference is to acquire "a young NHL-ready forward" as part of a package deal. However, the Journal-Constitution notes the team might not be able to acquire exactly what they're looking for.

"That might not be realistic," Waddell said. "They'll give you a better price if they don't touch their team. It's a two sided-thing. Certainly we want to help our team, but we have to look at it long term."

Meanwhile, the Thrashers could also move veteran center Bobby Holik by the trade deadline, along with forward Pascal Dupuis.

Both players are set to become unrestricted free agents July 1 and if the team starts to sell off its players, it's likely Holik and Dupuis could be dealt by Feb. 26.

RE: Hossa could command big return

I think Hossa is the biggest name that could be available for the trade deadline (Sundin is #2). How often does a 40g scorer become available for trade during his prime? If Columbus is in the playoff hunt, I think that Atlanta could get a ton from them since they have so many young and talented players in the minors (Brule, Brassard, Voracek, etc.). The Rangers might go for it, too since they could offer any of Marc Staal, Al Montoya, or Alexei Cherepanov.

RE: Hossa could command big return

If he does get traded I doubt it will be to a team in the East, just because Atlanta wouldn't want to be playing against him all the time (Much like Forsberg going East to Philly from Colorado). I know it's probably crazy to think this, because St. Louis hasn't been a buyer in several years, but they are right on the brink of a playoff spot...and they don't really have either guy that will be lighting it up everynight. With Hossa playing RW there, Andy McDonald or Boyes could be putting up even more points...Mind ya, Hossa would come with a big price tag, and I don't know if they have the depth to give up good prospects or picks. But I'm sure with the rebuilding of the past 3 or 4 years they must have a few fellows they can live without.

I don't know if St. Louis would give up the young talent for Hossa. I remember when John Davidson became GM for them, he was emphasizing about building the team through their youngsters. With so many good prospects in their farm team, I think they might just wait 2 years or so and have them develop than basically trading a ton of youth right now.

True, but I mean, with a fellow like Hossa, a team could afford a prospect or two, for the return he would give them, especially if the prospect(s) wasn't on the roster.

I could see San Jose going after Hossa. The scoring out there has really dropped off this year and they have the room under the Cap. Both the Rangers and Blues are pretty close to the Salary Cap and probably would need to give something up from their rosters to afford Hossa.

RE: Hossa could command big return

I don't think Ottawa would be able to afford Hossa after this season. I doubt they would give up as much as it will take to get Hossa to use him as a rental player. If Ottawa could get rid of one of their goalies it might work but even then it would be tough to afford his salary next season along with the other high salaries they are paying.

RE: Hossa could command big return

(This Post is mainly how I view the Hossa situation and what I remember of him from my experiences in Ottawa)
Hossa
Hossa!
HOSSA!!!!

I remember the good old days, back before the lockout when Hossa was an Ottawa Senator. He was my favorite player and was also one of the best in the NHL.

When Hossa was traded I was heartbroken. I could not believe that it happened and in return for Heatley? What a bad deal!
(Well.. to me at the time it was, maily because of my bias)
But know, 3 years after the fact, It looks like Ottawa won the deal. Heatley is an extrodinary player with uncharted skill. (But Hossa is still #1 to me)

Now, having Hossa on the trading block is high risk for most of the teams that are still in the playoff race. What if Hossa is traded to the team that you will face in the first round? What if Hossa tears up the league and knocks you out of contention? My main question/worry is what if Hossa is traded to a divisonal rival?

I am hearing over the internet that Hossa has a high chance of being traded to Montreal. If Montreal can obtain Hossa for a player like Higgins and a pick, they would be almost completly unstoppable. If Hossa goes to Toronto (Which I am almost 100% positive he won't) it would be a sad day for all sens fans.

Now... If Hossa is traded to Ottawa, chances would be great that a Stanley Cup would finally make it to Canada's Capital. (Which would be a dream come true) But would they be unstoppable? Nope. In fact, I think Hossa would become more of a burden on the franchise at this point then a help.

If Hossa would return, controversy would be almost likely to follow. Many Sens fans lost respect for Hossa after he was traded (as do many fans of various teams when a skilled player goes to another team) and I am not sure if he would be welcomed back with opened arms. At the same time I know alot of people would love to see Hossa wear red and white again.

I think a team that would be guarenteed a cup if they can land Hossa is Detroit. Dallas, with Brett Hull at the helm, will also be a team to watch out for in my opinion. Hull has been quoted saying he would love to make a blockbuster type trade. (And I think acquirng Hossa would be a blockbuster)

But. with this being said. Hossa to Ottawa! (I would love to see it)
