Howie Morenz
Morenz was arguably the greatest and most beloved athlete in Montreal sports history in addition to being the first true superstar of The Canadiens. He was an incredibly fast player who scored A LOT of goals in an era where not many goals to be had. However Morenz's career abruptly ended one night when he was driven into the boards and shattered his leg. He spent a few weeks in the hospital before he died due to complications from the injury. Some say, however, that he died of a broken heart, knowing he would never play hockey again.
The man was such an icon in Montreal that when his casket lay in state at center ice of The Montreal Forum, the whole city essentially shut down so that every man, woman, and child could pay their final respects to the man they had known as "The Stratford Streak."
In addition to this, he was the father in law of a future Candien great, Bernard "Boom Boom" Geoffrieon, the man credited with inventing the slap shot, and the great-grandfather to another up and comer, Blake Geoffrieon.

RE: Howie Morenz
Yup, no problem. I felt the need to post it after seeing that no one had included Morenz in the "Top 3 Players in Montreal History" thread. To me, that's a travesty.

Howie Morenz is VERY underrated and was one of the biggest icons in Montreal sport history. He was also one of the best player of his ERA.
... HOWEVER, with all the knowledge I have about the history of the Montreal Canadiens, I wouldn't put Morenz in my Top-3 Canadiens players of all-time.
Maurice Richard is the clear N.1. He's the most beloved and important player to ever wear the CH. The most gifted? I doubt, but he deserve this spot quite easily.
Jean Béliveau Le gros Bill. Heart and soul of the Montreal Canadiens for 18 years. Always played for the CH.
Guy Lafleur Le demon blond. One of the most gifted player ever, he was flying on the ice. He was a god among men in Montreal.
Jacques Plante A goaltender who revolutionized the way to stop the puck. Recognize for wearing the mask, the 7 time Vezina player was way more than that. He was the first to play the puck around his net. In my opinion, he's the best goaltender to have wear the CH jersey, and maybe the best goalie of all-time.
Doug Harvey Best defenseman to wear the CH. After Bobby Orr, possibly the best D ever. EASILY the best defensive defenseman of all-time. He could control the pase of a game as we want.
----------------------------------------------------------
After that, I would put these guys in no order:
Larry Robinson
Aurele Joliat
Howie Morenz
Patrick Roy
Toe Blake (player and coach)
Henri Richard
Yvan Cournoyer
Dickie Moore
Bernard Geoffrion

RE: Howie Morenz
That's an interesting take on things. My list would be:
Maurice Richard
Jean Believeu
Howie Morenz
However, keep in mind that I'm not exactly a Canadiens historian.

RE: Howie Morenz
I was just reading that a little bit ago. To me it'd be extremely strange knowing that not only your grandfather (Bernard Geoffrion) but also your great grandfather are hockey legends. The pressure on that kid must be palpable!

I don't think so. If he lives up to his potential, Blake Geoffrion weill NOT be the 1/10th of what Bernard Geoffrion or Howie Morenz was. He's supposed to become a good 3rd/4th liner in the NHL.
I wish him good luck!

RE: Howie Morenz
Yes, but the problem is that most hockey fans you talk to don't know that about him. They see the name Geoffrion and they think he's going to be this great player. Thats' where the pressure is going to come from.
