Hurricanes agree to terms with goaltending prospect Leighton

Quote:
The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to terms Friday with goaltender Michael Leighton on a one-year contract.

Leighton's two-way deal would pay him $550,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 if he is in the minor leagues. The Hurricanes acquired Leighton from Montreal for a seventh-round draft pick.

Leighton, 26, spent time with the Anaheim, Nashville, Philadelphia and Montreal organizations during the 2006-07 season. In five regular-season NHL games with Nashville and Philadelphia, Leighton went 2-2 with a 3.94 goals-against average.

He was 10-6-3 with a 2.14 GAA in 21 regular-season games in the AHL. Leighton was a sixth-round pick by Chicago in the 1999 draft.

They didn't call him a prospect, the original poster did. The only reason the canes acquired him was to add a little depth in case Ward or Grahame become injured at some point in the season. None of the canes goaltending prospects have played a single nhl game besides preseason. Also, having Leighton in Albany to help out Justin Peters, who struggled their in his first season last year, will do wonders for him as well as make the team much more competitive.
