Hurricanes hire Tom Barrasso as director of goaltender development

Quote:
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Stanley Cup-winning goalie Tom Barrasso was hired as the Carolina Hurricanes' director of goaltender development on Friday.

Barrasso, who won consecutive Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and '92, will work with the goalies in Albany of the American Hockey League, Florida of the ECHL and several junior teams.

"Tom brings instant credibility to his new position, and is somebody that the goaltenders in our system will be able to respect and learn from," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We are happy that he has chosen to continue his life in hockey with our organization."

The 42-year-old Barrasso played 18 seasons in the NHL for Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Carolina, Toronto and St. Louis before retiring in 2003.

He had a goals-against average of 3.24 with 38 shutouts in 777 games and ranks 13th among goalies with 369 career wins.
