Hussein Sentenced to Death
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's High Tribunal on Sunday found Saddam Hussein guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to hang for the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the city of Dujail. The visibly shaken former leader shouted "God is great!"
Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court, were sentenced to join Saddam on the gallows for the Dujail killings after an unsuccessful assassination attempt during a Saddam visit to the city 35 miles north of Baghdad.
The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals panel which as unlimited time to review the case. If the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

RE: Hussein Sentenced to Death
I saw this this morning. I guess he's nervous now? I don't get why all of a sudden he's preaching peace to Iraqis though.

Hopefully get what he deserves. He tortured his people for many years.
I wonder how long his appeal will take. I read that after the appeal is settled he will but put to death with 30 days. Thats
much faster than here in the states.

All I have to say is that is awesome news for the Iraqi people. I also heard that over 2000 Hussein supporters gathered in his hometown of Tikrit. Maybe his death will bring an end to all the death and destruction over there.

RE: Hussein Sentenced to Death
Wow. 30 days. Thats pretty fast. In the United States isn't 5 years before they exucute someone?
Anyways, Saddam Hussein is a very bad person. What he did in his life is unforgiveable, but I don't think he deserves to be killed, I don't believe in capital punishment. It might of been better for him just to stay in jail for the rest of his life.
The thing that scared me is what could the after affects be. There are still Saddam followers out there. Will they go and shoot everyone up after Hussein is killed or maybe they'll try and free him before the day of his death.
I guess I'll have to wait and see. Hopefully no after affects happen.

What's even worse about this guy is that this is just the start. He has a few more trials for crimes against humanity all over the country. This guy brutally killed something like a 500,000 people. They can't hang him enough for wha he has done.

RE: Hussein Sentenced to Death
I don't think he deserves to be housed in jail and taken care of for the rest of his life. No jail conditions could be bad enough to match what he deserves for the crimes he's committed.

Do you honestly think if he were to spend his last days behind bars, that he would stay there? I think the longer he lives the more opportunity to get him out. I also think that alot of the Iraqi people will live in great fear as long as he's alive.

RE: Hussein Sentenced to Death
I can't say I'm a big proponent of capital punishment, but in this case, I'm all for it. When you think about it, no punishment is fitting for what this man has done to his own people. If I were in charge, he would die today for all the crimes against humanity in which he committed. As for any repercussions that may be carried out by Hussein's supporters, I'm not concerned because those people want us to be afraid of some retaliation. After Saddam dies, these terrorist will have no leader and it will send a message to the world that as long as people like Hussein are around, the world, specifically the middle east, will never have peace.
