Interesting move, I guess the flyers want a quick fix because Meyer could be a up and coming d-man. I think he was on the flyers powerplay.

This trade would have make sense to me if it was the New York Islanders acquiring Alexei Zhitnik.

The Islanders is the team fighting for a playoff spot, while the Philadelphia Flyers are already looking for next year. However, it's the Flyers acquiring the veteran defenseman, having to pay him 3.5M a year until 2009, while the Isles are getting a young defenseman, yet inexperimented in Freddy Meyer and a high third round pick.

This move can only tell that Islanders GM Garth Snow has give up on Zhitnik and that Flyers GM Paul Holmgrem havn't give up on his hope of making the playoffs this year.

Yea, as a Flyers fan this doesnt make much sense to me. Its going to be tough to salvage anything from this season so why not take the rest of the year to help guys like Meyer develop. What happpened to rebuilding with youth? Not to mention we threw in a DP.

I don't have a problem with this trade. The salary is a little high but they have cap space so why not. They need some help and Zhitnik is only 34, he's not that old. He has speed which is the Flyers main problem at defence.

Interesting deal - on one hand Zhitnik is a savvy veteran that will step in and help the Flyers blueline immediately, however Meyer would have been the better option for the long term. Sure, he's inexperianced and probably won't put up the numbers Alexi has, but Meyer is quick and had he stayed in Philly, he could have made more of an impact for the Flyers than he will in NY. But it's nice to see Philly hasn't given up on this year, and it's also nice to see Garth Snow make a logical deal for once.
