Leafs fire Ferguson
TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs fired general manager John Ferguson on Tuesday, replacing him with former GM Cliff Fletcher on an interim basis.
The Maple Leafs, who have missed the playoffs the past two years, are 14th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 19-22-5-3 record. Fletcher served as GM of the Maple Leafs from 1991 to 1997.
"Our team performance has fallen short of what is to be expected," Richard Peddie, president and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, said during a news conference at the Air Canada Centre. "We need to forge the start of a new beginning for (the) Toronto Maple Leafs."
Fletcher twice guided the team to the Western Conference finals. The 72-year-old is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
"We have reached out to Cliff Fletcher and his 50-plus years of hockey management experience," Peddie said.
Fletcher, who received a 19-month contract, will work as a consultant after the new GM is hired.
"I know here in Toronto the expectations are high," Fletcher said. "I look forward to the challenge and a few tough months ahead."
The MLSE board of directors met on Monday and decided to make the change. Ferguson, hired as GM in 2003, was informed on Tuesday.
Its about time. Ferguson has been doing a horrible job and the Leafs haven't been the same since the lockout ended. They need someone with vision to help them like St. Louis has turned it around with their new GM, John Davidson.

RE: Leafs fire Ferguson
It is difficult to know how much power he really had to make a difference in Toronto. They were saying on the Torontoradio station that he had gone to the board of govoners with a plan in which they may not make the playoffs for a couple of years so that they could build around youth. The board rejected this plan and told him to come back with one where the goal is to make the playoffs in the first year not down the road.
I remember hearing him in an interview right after the lockout saying that the goal wasn't neccesarily to make the playoffs but just to improve the team and it was one of the smartest things I have heard any member of the Leaf organization say.
I wonder who they will get as a full time GM. I am guessing it will be someone with more expeirience than Ferguson. I think they wanted someone that they could control and that is why they gave Ferguson the job in the first place. Hopefully for Leaf fans they now realize they need a real hockey guy that can make decisions and not someone they can push around.

RE: Leafs fire Ferguson
sort of what daminal said, but, i think for the leafs organization, it is a time for rebuilding. what i think they need to do, is trade sundin, and build for the future. they are decent in prospects right now, with a future goalie in justin pogge, and a decent centre in jiri tlusty. and there wingers dont look to bad. they could trade sundin for some draft picks and good prospects, you also have steen and stajan who are both pretty young. if they could manage to get drew doughty this year in the entry draft or at least luke schenn (shutdown d-man). if they do this, wait some time. and in a few years they could be a pretty dominate team.

Its not like Ferguson had much control anyway. the MLSE did a horrible job and Ferguson just went along for the ride. That is why one of the major points Fletcher put in his contract was that he has control, not MLSE.
