Lidstrom's new two-year deal with Wings worth $15M

Quote:
Nicklas Lidstrom and the Red Wings agreed to a two-year extension on Wednesday that will keep the star defenseman under contract with Detroit through the 2009-10 season.

The two-year deal is worth about $15 million.

"Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years," Detroit general manager Ken Holland said. "He's a great captain and role model who does everything right, both on and off the ice."

Winner of five Norris Trophies, the 37-year-old Swede is the highest-scoring defenseman in Red Wings history with 900 points in 15 seasons. He was picked by Detroit in the third round of the 1989 draft.

In 1,212 regular-season NHL games, Lidstrom has 205 goals and 695 assists. He has 39 goals and 97 assists in 192 playoff games.

The eight-time NHL All-Star has three goals and 29 in 36 games this season. He has points in 21 of the last 28 games.

Great move for the Wings. I hope Lidstrom plays out his career with the Wings.

RE: Lidstrom's new two-year deal with Wings worth $15M

Lidstrom has no intentions of leaving the Wings and playing for another team. I think he said previously that the only way he'll leave the Wings is if he's going to play in Sweden so his kids can go to school there. Its amazing that he's so old, but still one of the best defensemen in the league!
