Malkin participates in contact drills, could play soon

Quote:
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Penguins rookie center Evgeni Malkin took part in limited contact drills in practice with his teammates Friday, and head coach Michel Therrien said the Russian star could make his NHL debut as early as next week.

Malkin, the No. 2 pick in the 2004 draft, dislocated his shoulder in a preseason game Sept. 20. He probably will not play Saturday against Carolina, and doctors will decide whether he will play Wednesday against New Jersey, Therrien said.

"He's making some great progress," Therrien said. "He's working really hard to get back into the lineup as soon as possible. We're excited about the way he's come along."

In 2005-06, Malkin had 47 points in 46 games for Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League and had six points in seven games for Russia at the Turin Olympics.

I can't wait to see Malkin play! Imagine him with Crosby, Ryan Malone, and Jordan Staal! Craziness!

I think Staal is up with the team until Malkin comes back - I know I read it in an article when Malkin injured his shoulder.

Well that's too bad. He looked good scoring that shorthanded breakaway goal in the Penguins game last night.

I can't wait to see Malkin light up the NHL just like his fellow countryman did last year. Well that's IF he lives up to the hype.

If they don't send him down to junior before he plays his 10th game he has to play the whole season in the NHL. He can't be sent to the AHL during this season. I'm not sure why they do this but if they are still junior age they either play in the NHL or their junior team but not the AHL or ECHL.

Malkin will be making his debut on Wednesday:

Quote:
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, out since injuring a shoulder in his first preseason game, will make his NHL debut Wednesday night against New Jersey.

Malkin, the No. 2 pick in the 2004 NHL draft, dislocated his shoulder Sept. 20 while colliding with teammate John LeClair behind the net. He returned to practice Friday with a shoulder support and has been cleared to resume playing.

In 2005-06, Malkin had 47 points in 46 games for Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League and six points in seven games for Russia at the Turin Olympics. He left the Magnitogorsk team when it arrived for training camp in Finland in August and made his way secretly to the United States, where he signed with the Penguins.

Until last month, Malkin was widely considered the best player in the world not in the NHL. He is an excellent passer and playmaker and made several standout plays in the exhibition game before getting hurt.
