In the 92-93 season, Lemieux was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in January and was forced to undergo energy-draining radiation treatments. After returning from the treatments, he went on a tear. He scored 30 goals and 26 assists in his final 20 games, including back-to-back four-goal games, and later a five-goal game, and Pittsburgh won an NHL record 17 straight.

By the end of the season, Lemieux had scored 69 goals and 160 points in only 60 games, to win the Art Ross trophy, and naturally the Hart and Lester B. Pearson as well.

The only reason Gretzky didn't win the Calder is because the NHL was trying to punish players that had played in the WHL. Gretzky tied for the league lead in scoring and had 37 points more then Mario in his rookie season.

Gretzky was playing with good players but they were a bunch of rookies. He made most of those guys great. Would anyone even know who Jari Kurri was without Gretzky?
