Brodeur made 33 saves, and Jaime Langenbrunner scored in his fourth straight game to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Brodeur had one of his worst games of his career against Toronto on Oct. 12, allowing six goals in a shootout victory.

"I was thinking about that in the second period," Brodeur said. "This was definitely a more typical game between the Devils and Maple Leafs, that's for sure."

Toronto's Darcy Tucker spoiled Brodeur's shutout bid when he scored on a long slap shot with 3:37 left in the third. Brodeur is one shutout away from tying Glenn Hall for third place on the NHL career list.

He was solid throughout - particularly in the third period when he stopped 16 shots.

Tucker brought the crowd to life with a goal that made Brodeur's shoulders sag. The puck skipped off the ice before finding the back of the net.

"There was a moment of weakness on that goal, but I felt great. It's only my second time all year I've played back-to-back," Brodeur said. "It's nice to be able to perform at that level."

Patrick Elias also scored for the Devils, who have won six of seven. The Devils improved to 4-5 on the road, compared to 8-1-1 at home.

"We gave up too many chances. Thankfully for us Marty was on his game," Elias said.

The Maple Leafs, who have lost two straight, recalled goalie Mikael Tellqvist from their AHL affiliate after backup Jean Sebastien-Aubin became ill. Top goalie Andrew Raycroft is sidelined with a strained groin.

Tellqvist made a few nice saves in facing 19 shots, and hopes another team will take notice.

"I'm not in ideal situation here. I'm the third goalie here," Tellqvist said. "I just have to wait and see. I wanted to come up with a strong performance for the team and fans. I felt pretty good. It was a bad bounce on the second goal. It could have been 1-1 instead of 2-1."

Langenbrunner turned and put a hard slap shot past Tellqvist at 16:51 of the first. Zach Parise assisted on Langenbrunner's fifth goal in five games. Parise - a second-year forward - has a team-leading 14 points in 18 games.

Elias' shot deflected in off Toronto defenseman Brendan Bell at 12:16 of the third, a drive Tellqvist didn't even see. Elias has just four goals this season.

"I saw (Jaromir) Jagr score like that once. I thought I'd try it," Elias joked.

Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe almost tied with just over a minute left, but Brodeur made a spectacular save.

The Maple Leafs pulled Tellqvist for an extra attacker, but couldn't get the tying goal past Brodeur.

"Give them credit. Brodeur played great," Toronto's Matt Stajan said.

Notes: New Jersey's Cam Janssen lost his shirt during a fight Toronto's Wade Belak in the first. ... Hall of Game goalie Johnny Bower received a rousing ovation when shown on the videoboard.

Was a pretty boring game. Glad I was able to watch the stars vs. canes instead. Too bad Brodeur had his shutout spoiled near the end though, that's the worst.

Toronto really poured it on right at the end of the game. The last 5 minutes even beofre they pulled their goalie the Devils couldn't get it out of their end. Brodeur made a couple of amazing saves but most of the 34 shots on him were not real quality scoring chances. I only saw one replay of Tucker's goal but it looked to me like it hit the defenseman (I think it was rafalski) just after Tucker shot it.
