SUNDIN ITCHIN' TO LACE 'EM UP ON BROADWAY

Free-agent center Mats Sundin has declared his interest in playing for the RangersNew York Rangers this season, well-connected sources have told The Post.

J.P. Barry, who represents the elite, 37-year-old former Toronto pivot, has been in constant communication with Rangers front-office personnel this week, The Post has learned, though the conversations have not reached the stage of a contract negotiation.

There have been no numbers exchanged between Sundin and the Rangers, who have approximately $2 million of cap space to spend on the 2008-09 roster.

We're told Sundin, who recorded 78 points (32-46) last season, has no interest in returning to the Maple Leafs, who have offered him a one-year, $7M contract to re-up. Sundin apparently has negligible interest in joining Montreal, which has been chasing him since February, or Vancouver, which has offered a two-year, $20M deal.

Indeed, sources report that No. 13's second choice is Philadelphia, whose GM, Paul Holmgren, has been aggressive in his pursuit of the first-line center who could swing the balance of power in the East.

The Rangers would love to have Sundin, there is no question about that. He could team with Markus Naslund and Nikolai Zherdev while Chris DruryChris Drury shifts to left wing to play with Scott GomezScott Gomez and perhaps Ryan Callahan.

But GM Glen Sather faces a daunting challenge in reconstructing the roster in order to fit Sundin under the cap, and would almost certainly have to dilute his defense in order to do so.

Assuming Sundin would be willing to play for between $5-7M, the Blueshirts would almost certainly have to move defenseman Michal Rozsival, who re-signed on July 1 for $5M per for four years.

The problem, however, is that the Rangers have only six NHL defensemen on their roster - including Rozsival.

I think we are all getting a little sick and tired of the Sundin saga. Hurry up and make a decision Mats.

RE: Mats interested in joining Rangers?

I was never, ever a fan of Mats Sundin, and I'm a Leaf fan. I guess I was always a little bitter because they traded away my childhood god to get him. But, wow, their depth chart looks horrible without him. I think if they managed to get him back this year, they might actually be contenders...I mean what main component did they lose this offseason, that would make them any worse? This team, plus Sundin would look, alright at least.

I don't think in this age in hockey you even need to rebuild...why weren't the Maple Leafs even bothering to get in on the Hossa sweepstakes this season? Hossa and Sundin would have been what...15 mil cap space for this season...max, sign Hossa to a 5 year contract, have him around till hes 35ish. Declining Contract, 8 mil, 8 mil, 7.5, 7.5, 7...or sumthin similar. What I'm saying is, you dont need John Tavares to become competitive, again. Keep around your first round pick if you aren't a contender...offseason try and trade it with a roster player to improve, make a signing in the offseason to replace him. Maybe I'm blowing smoke..but doesn't that make a bit of sense? Sure Hossa probably wouldn't have signed, but why not spend that 6 mil, gobbled up by gambling on two alright players in Hagman and Finger? Almost every year star players hold out for Free Agency, keep your picks, and sign one star to a multiyear deal. Aren't NYR looking better in the past two years with recent signings of Gomez, Drury, Naslund Kalinin and Redden whom were all free agent signings? Not only that, if Sundin goes there..they are talking about moving Gomez...you know what that means, more assets!

I highly doubt the Rangers would consider moving a young Gomez(who is signed to a multi year deal), for a 37 year old who would only be good for one or two seasons. Just doesn't make sense to me.
