NHL taking steps to prevent gambling by refs
In light of the recent gambling scandal with Phoenix Coyotes assistant Rick Tocchet and NBA referee Tim Donaghy, the NHL isn't taking any chances. Apparently, NHL referees, who used to receive their assignments a month in advance, aren't being told where they're working until two weeks ahead of time.

That's a very good news. NHL is being proactive, and it has to be after the events happening in other sports. It took few years to get people interested again in hockey after the lockout period (especially in the States), and the NHL has to make sure its image is only improving over the years.

RE: NHL taking steps to prevent gambling by refs
I am wondering what this will do. So they don't know where they are going until 48 hours in advance. You can place bets pretty much right up until game time. It's just a feel good action in my opinion.

That's true...but remember John that these referees have to travel to different cities, and they (or the NHL) need to buy airline tickets and all that...But as you said, trying to discussing this issue is still a good action by itself, and should make any ref more aware of the dangers of it.
