Nagy works OT magic in 2-1 win

Dal

While waiting for one new player to arrive, the Dallas Stars received a major contribution from a newbie already on board.

Hours after general manager Doug Armstrong plucked solid defenseman and Los Angeles Kings captain Mattias Norstrom in a trade deadline deal, another recent trade acquisition, Ladislav Nagy, scored 95 seconds into overtime to lift Dallas to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Nagy, picked up from Phoenix in an exchange 14 days ago, scored his second goal in his sixth game as a Star to put Dallas into sole possession of second place in the Pacific Division. They are now five points behind first place Anaheim, and the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

It was the second consecutive win for Dallas in the extra session. The Stars defeated Vancouver on Sunday on Jere Lehtinen's winning tally.

"Big two points," coach Dave Tippett said. "We played a solid team game tonight and we controlled the play for most of the game."

Surveying behind the Tampa Bay net, Mike Ribeiro slid slightly to his right before sending a tape-to-tape pass to an oncoming Nagy in the slot. Nagy one-timed the feed, beating Lightning goalie Johan Holmqvist with a hard shot that went into the top-left corner.

"Ribeiro and I see each other well and we are developing a good chemistry," said Nagy, who has two goals in his last three games after being put on a line with Ribeiro. "He is a great passer and he had an incredible setup in overtime. You always have to be ready for his passes. I'm learning that he likes playing the net, and he is just a great playmaker."

Ribeiro has eight points in his past seven games.

"The coaches encourage me to try and create plays, especially from behind the net," he said. "I tried a couple passes earlier that didn't get through, but the one in overtime did and Lady buried it."

In a game that featured the second-stingiest defense in the league against the fifth-highest scoring team in the Eastern Conference, Dallas seemed at ease playing a more up-tempo style than it usually plays. The Stars outshot the Lightning by a 15-6 margin over the final period and overtime, and 28-20 overall.

The Stars were also able to put the clamps on the league's leading goal scorer, Vincent Lecavalier, and the second-leading point-getter, Martin St. Louis, in winning for the third time in their last five road games.

"We held them to less chances than we are used to getting, and we played a solid 60-minute game," goalie Marty Turco said. "Everyone was just real solid. We put together a solid road game and we are showing how we are capable of playing."

Dallas beat the Lightning in Tampa Bay for the eighth consecutive time, and finished the month of February with an 8-2-1 mark, the second-best February record in team history. The team has points now in 14 of 17 games, and continue to zero in on the Ducks.

"We are doing a lot of things we want to do as a team and we are finding ways to win," Tippett said. "We executed well, and I liked the way we set the tone early."

Dallas held the territorial advantage throughout a scoreless first period. The Stars forechecking hemmed the Lightning in their own zone for extended periods during the stanza, and they seemed to have the puck on a string during some stretches.

Tampa Bay, though, blocked six shots and was able to force the Stars to the perimeter, with most of Dallas' eight shots coming from the exterior. Defenseman Darryl Sydor nearly put the Stars on the board when his slap shot from the left point rang off the post as time expired.

Things began much differently in the second period, thanks in part to a full two-minute 5-on-3 power play the Lightning enjoyed early on after Stephane Robidas and Loui Eriksson were whistled for penalties at the same time.

During the two-man advantage, the Lightning were thwarted by the Stars penalty killers, putting only two shots on Turco. Undaunted, Tampa Bay stayed on the offensive, registering the first seven shots overall before Dallas was able to regain its edge.

Lehtinen finally solved Holmqvist with a power play tally with nine minutes remaining in the second. Standing near the bottom of the left circle, Lehtinen was able to one-time Jussi Jokinen's pass past Holmqvist for his team-leading 22nd of the year.

Lehtinen has now scored 15 times in the last 25 games, 10 of which coming with the man advantage.

Tampa Bay tied it with a short-handed goal with just 19 seconds left in the period. Brad Richards tipped the puck past Sergei Zubov at the Lightning blueline and outraced the defenseman to go in alone on Turco. Turco attempted to poke-check the hard-charging Richards, but the winger deftly deked to his forehand to deposit the puck into the vacated net.

The goal extended Richards' point streak to nine games.

Turco, making his fourth start in five games, improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Lightning, steering aside 19 shots. In all, Dallas rang four shots off the post, including twice in the second period on blasts from Philippe Boucher and Nagy, and then in the third on an Eric Lindros screamer.

The Stars continue their Florida trek when they take on the Panthers on Thursday night in a game that can be seen on FSN. Dallas, making its first visit to Florida since the 2003-04 season, has compiled a 5-4-1 mark at Florida since the Panthers arrived in the league in 1993. Faceoff is set for 6:30, with Norstrom expecting to make his debut.

"We are excited about the addition of Norstrom and we want to keep this momentum going," Turco said.

Following the game Dallas will host Columbus on Friday and San Jose on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks obtained former Star Bill Guerin from St. Louis on Tuesday prior to the NHL trade deadline.
