New Captain in Philadelphia

TSN.ca Staff

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Monday that defenceman Jason Smith will be the team's new captain for the 2007-08 season.

The Flyers acquired Smith, along with forward Joffrey Lupul in a trade for blueliner Joni Pitkanen on July 1.

Smith, 33, was captain of the Oilers since the 2001-02 season. He has 39 goals and 119 assists in 868 career games with the Devils, Toronto and Edmonton.

This is a good move for the Flyers. I thought maybe Richards should get the C but he probably needs a few more years of expierience. Smith is a respected guy throughout the league and it's not a big deal that this is his first year with the Flyers.

RE: New Captain in Philadelphia

I've always respected Smith. I think he'll make a great captain for Philly.
