Brent Sutter, who has been the Devils’ head coach for less than two weeks, said yesterday that he had hired four assistant coaches. It is not as if he had to look very far. All four have either coached or played for the Devils. One led them to the Stanley Cup.

When the Devils open their season Oct. 4 at Tampa Bay, Sutter will be joined behind the bench by Larry Robinson, who has been the Devils’ head coach twice, and by John MacLean, who said two months ago that he wanted the job that went to Sutter.

Tommy Albelin, a former Devils defenseman, will help coach the team from the press box during games. Jacques Caron will return for his 15th season as the coach of the team’s goaltending corps, which includes Martin Brodeur and Kevin Weekes.

The coaches were apparently Sutter’s choices.
