Nieuwendyk retiring
Well this news sucks for the struggling Panthers.
The Panthers have only won a single game in the last seven.
I sure hope Burt is ready to play soon.
John
Center Joe Nieuwendyk, one of the most accomplished players ever to wear a Florida Panthers uniform, announced his retirement today.
Nieuwendyk, 40, had missed 14 of 29 games this season because of back problems.
He said he made the decision after being advised to retire by a back specialist he visited last week at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
"It's always very hard to walk away, but I was told that this is the best thing for my future," he said before the team's practice at Incredible Ice.
He had told his teammates this morning that he would be leaving the team.
Nieuwendyk had five goals and three assists this year.
Last season, his first with the Panthers, he had 26 goals and 30 assists in 65 games.
He won the Stanley Cup with three teams: Calgary in 1989, Dallas in 1999 and New Jersey in 2003

RE: Nieuwendyk retiring
It's been a good career for this guy. It'll be nice to see him retire and know that he is definitely a Hall of Fame candidate.
you're in oil country

RE: Nieuwendyk retiring
He is someone who should be mentioned in the Hall of Fame discussions. I don't think he will get in any time soon though due to other guys who have retired recently. He is good but not same calibre as guys like Messier, hull, francis, macinnis, robitaille and the list goes on with guys who have retired in the last year and a half.

frankley Joe played one to many seasons for me... he should have retired at the end of last season! and thats not taking anything away from his carreer, it was a great one... and i can see him being entered in the HHOF, but its really lame to see someone of his calibur having to retire because of injury, not because it was the right time.

I don't think you can really blame him for the way he went out, happens to a lot of guys. There are not a lot who finish careers like Gretzky and Bourque. Most guys stick around to long, look at Hull last year and look at whats going on with Leclair. These guys love the game and the money and a lot aren't going to stop playing until they have to.

RE: Nieuwendyk retiring
Sad way for a great career to end. It would've been much nicer had he been able to hang them up on his own terms, not because of injuries. But what can you do?
