Offseason Outlook: Devils

Season Review:
The Devils had another solid season. Martin Brodeur is the wine of NHL hockey: he only gets better with age. Brodeur had perhaps his best statistical season in his career and led this team on his back as he broke the NHL single season wins record. The Devils won the Atlantic division yet again and had a strong showing in the playoffs, but lost to the Senators 4-1 in the 2nd round.

Offseason Needs:
Two words will describe the offseason of NJ GM Lou Lamorillo (sp?): damage control. After toying with the upper limits of the cap last season, NJ will need to do more juggling around as key players (re: Gomez & Rafalski) will be UFAs and looking for raises. Gomez is all but gone, which means the Devils need to keep puck-moving Rafalski even more (especially since he's the key to this aging and fading blueline). With Gomez gone, the Devils need another top 6 center (Parise should be able to step up as a good #2C or a decent #1C) and one more scoring winger couldn't hurt. A big, bruising stay-at-home defenseman would be nice so as to keep traffic away from workhorse Brodeur.

Next Season Outlook:
The Devils will stay good as long as Martin Brodeur is between the pipes. If they can't replace Gomez with a credible center, the Devils will probably lose their division crown next year to the high flying Pens or the streaky Rangers. However, defense wins championships and the Devils should at least make it to the 2nd rd of the playoffs again with Brodeur in net.
