Oilers tender offer sheet to Penner
http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?id=214708&hubname=
The Edmonton Oilers are back at it again, tendering a five year, $21.25 million offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks Group II restricted free agent Dustin Penner.
The Ducks have seven days to match Edmonton's offer. Should the Ducks decide not to match, the compensation from the Oilers would be a first-round draft pick as well as a second-round pick and a third-round choice.
The Oilers and Penners agent would not comment until after Anaheim made a decision.
''We're going to wait and see what happens here in the next seven days before we make a comment,'' Penner's agent Gerry Johannson told The Canadian Press.
The Ducks' salary cap currently sits at around $48 million. With the Penner signing, they would go over the $50.3-million maximum but a team is allowed to be over the salary cap by 10 per cent until Oct. 1.
It is the second time that Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe has gone after a restricted free agent this off-season. Lowe signed Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek to a seven-year, $50 million offer sheet in early July, an offer the Sabres matched to retain Vanek.
Penner, a native of Winkler, Man., played in all 82 last season, his first full season in the NHL. He put up 29 goals and 16 assists for 45 points while adding three goals and five assists for eight points in 21 playoff games for the Cup champions in 2006-07
Horrible move by Kevin Lowe. I can understand wanting to give Vanek $7M considering his ability to change the game on the offense, but Penner is not that great and has only had 1 year under his belt. I think Edmonton really should've gone after Parise or Cammalleri who could've added a lot more to their offensive game than Penner.

As much as I love Penner and want to see him stay in an Anaheim sweater, I think that Burke should call Lowe's bluff. Make him bite the bullet and over pay for a guy who still needs to be benched sometimes and whose stats were padded because of who he was playing with (Getzlaf and Perry). That'll send a message to Lowe and maybe make him stop making ridiculous offer sheets to other players.

RE: Oilers tender offer sheet to Penner
There has been a lot of ridiculous money thrown around this summer.
I don't really understand what Lowe is doing with these big contracts. It doesn't matter that they lose picks because the Oilers are terrible in the draft anyway but he is just pushing up the average salaries.
Penner would be a good addition but it is pretty risky for such a long contract for such a young guy.

By the sounds of it, Burke will likely match this offer, closing the door for Penner in Edmonton for a few more years. If the Oilers strike again, which I feel they will, look for Zach Parise to be offered a contract.

You don't know yet how Ganger will turn out in the NHL. Lots of OHL high scorers fail to make an impact in the NHL. If the world junior championships was any indication Gagner won't be great, he was the worst player for Canada this past year. Going back about 15 years there only good picks were Smyth and Arnott and they had a couple of decent ones with Hemsky, Comrie and Laraque.

RE: Oilers tender offer sheet to Penner
stilll, next season its almost a guarantee that the Oilers will be a bottom 10 team in the NHL. I'd personally rather have a top 10 pick + a high 2nd & 3rd rd pick than screw with my salary cap.
