Osgood bests Hasek in Wings Scrimmage

I like to see that. I would rather have Osgood over Hasek as a strating goal tender. I think Ozzie has more heart is more loyal to his team.

Chris Osgood had a pretty good explanation for why he outshone Dominik Hasek in Wednesday’s Red-White Scrimmage.

Osgood’s Reds hammered Hasek’s Whites, 7-2. Hasek gave up four goals on 14 shots in the two 15-minute periods he played at Centre ICE Arena. “Little difference in the quality of shots,” Osgood said, smiling. He saw 14 in the same amount of time.

Osgood is slated to start tonight when the Wings play their first of four exhibition games in five nights. That hectic pace will finally give management and the coaching staff the chance to see what some of the younger guys can do – something that scrimmaging amongst themselves really does not accomplish.

“It’s hard to believe you can come to camp and 40 players can all play bad,” general manager Ken Holland said. “I’ve been through it enough to know you’re really going to evaluate now that we get to play other teams.”

Holland got his first chance to evaluate during Tuesday’s exhibition game at Minnesota, won 3-2 by the Wild. Besides the first goal allowed by Joey MacDonald, Holland said he liked how both MacDonald and Stefan Liv played in goal.

“I thought Kyle Quincey played very, very well,” Holland said. “(Matt) Hussey has played really well in our camp. I didn’t think last night he played as well as he has been. We’re going to see what he can do again. Between now and Sunday a lot of these guys are going to get the chance to play a game or two and I think we’ll get a little better picture.”

The Wings like Hussey for his speed, and he might be a good fit for the Griffins, who will lose Jiri Hudler, Tomas Kopecky, possibly Darryl Bootland, from last year’s squad (Donald MacLean signed over the summer with Phoenix). All three would have to go through waivers to be sent back down, as would goalie Joey MacDonald. None would clear, so the Wings want to either keep them in Detroit or trade them.

The Wings know 18-20 guys who are going to on the team, leaving 7-8 guys to fight for the open spots. …

Forward Darren Helm was assigned to juniors, dropping Detroit’s roster to 45 players.
