RE: Ovechkin signs for 6 years, $54 million

TSN is saying that nothing has been finalized yet and the Capitals website has nothing on the story. TSN says that they are close on a deal which is great news for the Capitals. For their fans sake I hope that this is not another move like when they signed Jagr, where they sign one great player and don't give him any help.

Wow, that is an incredible contract. A little over $9.5mil per season. I kind of like these long term contracts the young guys are getting. Should make for some more stability among rosters down the road. We will see much less free agent movement if this trend continues. Good for the Caps to get this done.

I'd say Ovechkin is worth that kind of money (hockey's first $100 million dollar man!). I just hope this "trend" of signing players for 10+ years won't come back and bite an organization in the butt.

I really don't think this will bite them in the butt, just because the fact that he loves hockey, for the hockey, unlike Yashin. I mean he did ask for a lot, but sure he knows hes worth it, and I think he will play hard for it. He was saying in an interview that he wanted a long term deal, because he loves to play hockey, and he will play it hard for his contract, he said after sumthin like when you worry about money, you dont play hockey. Ovie's wicked b'y hahaha

no doubt its not unusual for play to decline once a big contract gets signed plus this could make it hard 4 the team to pay other top players so he better be prepared 2 do it all on his own.

thats the thing though, you can't do it on your own in hockey. the NHL is a TEAM game. superstars can bring in crowds, but they can't do anything by themselves. that's why the Bruins were going nowhere when they had Thornton and no one else. Ovechkin will need help from teammates to win a championship.
