SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida Panthers agreed to a six-year contract extension with center Stephen Weiss on Thursday.

Weiss, 24, recorded 20 goals and 28 assists this past season. The Toronto native has played in 249 games for Florida and scored 48 goals with 73 assists in his career.

The team did not release the terms of the deal. A telephone message left for Weiss' agent, Patrick Morris, was not immediately returned Thursday.

"Stephen is an important part of our core nucleus of offensive talent and we are pleased to have reached a long term agreement with him," coach and general manager Jacques Martin said in a statement. "He posted career best numbers last season and we look forward to his continued production and contributions to our organization both on and off the ice."

Weiss, the Panthers' fourth-overall choice in the 2001 draft, was named assistant captain this past season. He also got his first career hat trick last season and recorded 100th career NHL point.
