Red Wings' Johnson retires with heart abnormality
DETROIT (AP) -- Red Wings center Greg Johnson announced his retirement on Wednesday.
Johnson, 35, was diagnosed with a hereditary heart abnormality during his training camp physical. He played for 12 seasons and signed with Detroit as a free agent after playing with the Nashville Predators for most of his career.
He broke into the NHL with Detroit and also played with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks.
He scored 145 goals and 224 assists in 785 games and is Nashville's career leader with 502 games.
Johnson will join the Red Wings in a player development capacity, according to a release.

Man - what a shame! I guess on the bright side they caught before it caused him serious trouble.

RE: Red Wings' Johnson retires with heart abnormality
It seems as though heart problems are starting to become kind of common in the league. I don't really hear much about this sort of stuff in other sports leagues. This one plus Jiri Fischer last year and I know I've heard of another one in the last year but I can't remember the name. I hope this is either a fluke or they can figure out if something is causing the increase in heart problems.
Good Luck to Johnson in the future and I hope it doesn't cause any serious problems down the road.

RE: Red Wings' Johnson retires with heart abnormality
Every thing is starting to happen to all the young guys. Are they doing something different this day and age compared to the guys from 10 yrs ago? Training different, steroids maybe? Who knows. I'm not saying players are using drugs but you never know.

RE: Red Wings' Johnson retires with heart abnormality
I know during the lockout Sergei Zholtok died of a heart condition called cardiac arrythmia where I believe either the heart skips a beat or beats really fast. Also, Avalanche forward Steve Konowalchuck retired this offseason because of irregular heart beats (http://www.qnhl.com/Avalanche-forward-St...-1906.html).

RE: Red Wings' Johnson retires with heart abnormality
It can be due to steroids as habsfan mentioned, or it can just be a natural "defect" that appeared late in his life. It's good that he was caught early, because a known basketball player in Nigeria, for example, died a couple of years ago from a heart attack while doing training in the gym...which was a sad news to the basketball world in africa, and in the world in general. His name is Mo Acha.
