RE: Rookie MVP?
I think Ilya Kovalchuk has equal chances, may be more, since his team is stronger. He now has 81 points, and Crosby has 74.
I watched him in a couple of games, and he's sensional.

RE: Rookie MVP?
The 2005-2006 rookie class is one of the best ever in my opinion.
Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Dion Phaneuf are my top 3.

Hey GSA.. Ilya isnt up for the Calder. I think you may be talking about Alexandre the Great.
I know that Ovie will probally win it, but I'd like to see Crosby take home the hardware.
Im crossing my fingers

RE: Rookie MVP?
Yeah! Crosby,Ovechkin and Phaneuf were so great this season!
But, Another rookie played so well this season. I speak there of Henrik Lundquist. He was one of the reason(with Jagr) why the Rangers had so much succes this year!
Finally, The trophy will go to Crosby or Ovechkin.

RE: Rookie MVP?
People are underestimating the AWESOME season that Henrik Lundqvist had with the New York Rangers. It's so difficult to become an effective goaltender in the NHL, and he just made it look so easy! The rookie season of Raycroft was impressive, but the one of Lunqvist is without a doubt better.
#1 Alexander Ovechkin
#2 Sidney Crosby
#3 Henrik Lundqvist
#4 Dion Phaneuf
#5 Brad Boyes

RE: Rookie MVP?
Since im from NY, I've seen Lundqvist many times this season, both on TV andin person, and he shouldn't be in the top 5 of rookies this season. Crosby will win the award mostly because hes North American and hockey needs a face in America from someone close to home. Ovechkin still is the better all around player, but he doesn't make his teammates better, which is something Crosby does. Phaneuf will be in 3rd for the outstaining year he had in Calgary. As great of a year Boyes had, I have to put Marek Svatos and Jussi Jokinen infront of him. Svatos was unreal before his injury and Jokinen was so great in shootouts, it gave his team an extra 10 wins I believe (could be off on that number). Ryan Miller was this seasons best rookie goalie, IMO.

From what I see, you're not a NYR fan! I really think Lundqvist deserve a nomination, but it's your opinion and I respect it. But when you say that Crosby will win it because he's North American and hockey need a face cose to home etc ... Sorry but that it's just plain stupid. I hate when people say things like that. Do you know who's voting for the Calder?
I'll let you found out yourself.

If Crosby win it, he totally deserve it by the performance he put on the ice, just as Ovechkin. No bullshit reason.

RE: Rookie MVP?
I think it's close between Crosby and Ovechkin. I know that writers are voting on the award. But you cannot deny the fact that the NHL needs to begin to market its players or else their going to face the same thing they faced last year. It's part of publicity. The NFL has Tom Brady, the MLB has Barry Bonds, the NBA has Kobe Bryant, the NHL has no one. The NHL NEEDS to market players, and Crosby is the best player they have to market in a while. But how can you throw him up in a Gatorade commercial without saying that hes the best in his class? The NHL needs Crosby to win this award.

I don't tihnk the NHL absolutely need Crosby to win the Calder. He will become a force in the NHL and that's the most important thing. Also, Ovechkin is just as good and way more charismatic than Crosby. Moreover, you don't need only one guy to carry the NHL. the NHL as also Favre, Johnson - the NBA have also O'Neill, James - the MLB have also Pujols, Martinez etc... Let blossom the Ovechkin, Crosby, Phaneuf, Staal etc. So they became the face of the NHL, just like Lemieux, Gretzky, Messier and Hull have done it decade ago.
