STARGAZING

Clap5It was no surprise that in a game featuring two of the NHL's best goaltenders, only one goal was scored for the first 59 and a half minutes of regulation. Fortunately for the Stars, they were able to beat Vancouver All-Star netminder Roberto Luongo with an extra attacker with just 28.3 seconds left in the third period and then win it in overtime.

With two power play goals against the NHL's top-ranked penalty-killing unit, the Dallas Stars got goals from Philippe Boucher and Jere Lehtinen to defeat the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon at the American Airlines Center.

In an important Western Conference game that was a possible preview of a first-round playoff matchup, the Stars came back to defeat the Northwest Division leaders who were one of the hottest teams in the NHL.

But the Stars are now almost as hot, sporting an 8-2-1 record in their last 11 overall and an 8-1-1 mark in their last 10 at home. With the win, Dallas pulled to within three points of Anaheim atop the Pacific Division and tied San Jose for second in the division and fifth in the Western Conference. The Stars also improved to 6-1-0 in afternoon games this season.

Marty Turco was also solid in goal for the Stars, turning aside 17 Canucks shots and allowing the Stars the opportunity to come back in dramatic fashion.

The line of Mike Ribeiro, Loui Eriksson and Ladislav Nagy had another big game for Dallas, generating a large proportion of the Stars' scoring chances.

Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, the Stars continued to play a solid team game and to get shots on Luongo. Just 1:45 into the period, Nagy's tricky wrist shot was turned away by Luongo.

Turco made two nice stops three minutes later, stopping Henrik Sedin's wrist shot from the slot and then Markus Naslund's rebound.

Jere Lehtinen launched a high wrist shot a minute later that Luongo snagged in his glove to keep the Stars scoreless.

The Stars' best chance in the third period came on a power play eight minutes into the period when Darryl Sydor's blast from the blue line rang off the far goal post. The puck then rebounded out to Eriksson in the right face-off circle, but Luongo slid across to stop his wrister.

Mike Modano then had two good opportunities on the same shift about halfway through the third, but Luongo gloved his backhander in close, then thwarted his wrist shot 30 seconds later form the right circle.

Turco kept the Stars within striking range with five minutes to go with a sprawling pad save on Naslund in close. The Stars then went on the power play with 2:51 remaining in regulation after Jan Bulis knocked over Turco in the crease and was called for goaltender interference. The advantage turned into a 59-second 5-on-3 with 1:50 to go when Canucks defender Sami Salo lifted the puck out of play from his own zone.

Boucher blasted a slap shot from the blue line that Luongo knocked aside with the blocker with 1:23 left, and then, with Turco out of the net for an extra attacker, Sergei Zubov launched a slap shot that Luongo also saved.

The Stars finally broke through with just 28.3 seconds on the clock as Boucher snuck into the slot and received a slick pass from Ribeiro in the left face-off circle that he ripped through Luongo's pads to tie it on their 30th shot of the game.

In overtime, the Stars again had the territorial advantage, forcing Luongo to make several more tough stops, including one on Stephane Robidas's slap shot from the blue line two minutes in.

Jeff Halpern then split the Canucks' defense and skated in on Luongo, making a move to his backhand that Luongo got enough of a piece of to deflect just wide. Vancouver defenseman Lukas Krajicek was whistled for tripping on the play and the Stars went on the power play again.

Luongo denied another blast from Robidas in the high slot with 50 seconds remaining in OT, before Lehtinen's game-winner. Taking a soft feed from Zubov, Lehtinen drilled a one-timer from the left face-off circle over Luongo's glove hand for his team-leading 21st goal of the season.

Dallas outshot the Canucks 20-6 after the second period, including 6-0 in overtime.

Following a scoreless first period in which they outshot Vancouver 11-8, the Stars kept the offensive pressure on early in the second. A glaring Canucks turnover led to the best Dallas chance of the game to that point. Ribeiro intercepted Sami Salo's pass right in the high slot, skated in alone on Luongo and then dished off to a charging Eriksson. Luongo flashed out the pad to stop Eriksson's shot.

The Stars continued to press after that and hemmed the Canucks in their zone for several shifts, but it was Vancouver who eventually broke through for the game's first goal, as Taylor Pyatt scored his 17th of the season at 10:17. As the Canucks entered the Dallas zone with speed, Henrik Sedin passed from the right sideboards to Pyatt cutting down the slot, and Pyatt's quick wrister beat Turco over the shoulder.

Dallas continued to keep the puck in the Vancouver zone for the majority of the period, but weren't able to generate too many point-blank scoring opportunities.

Luongo made a nice arm save on Eriksson's tricky backhand from the right circle with six seconds left in the period to keep the Stars off the board.

The Stars came out of the chute quickly, testing Luongo with two quick shots in the first 30 seconds. First rookie Joel Lundqvist carried the puck around the Vancouver net and into the left circle before getting off a nice backhander that Luongo smothered. Ribeiro won the resulting face-off in the Canucks' zone, and Darryl Sydor ripped a slap shot from the blue line that Luongo was able to turn aside.

Turco made some nice saves on a Vancouver power play with three minutes gone in the first. Tommi Santala flubbed a shot while staring at an open net at the left side of the crease after Daniel Sedin fed him across the top of the crease. The puck ricocheted off Santala's stick right to a sliding Turco, who covered up on the goal line.

Turco also turned aside Pyatt's quick one-timer 30 seconds later.

With about five minutes left in the first, the Canucks had another prime opportunity when former Stars defenseman Willie Mitchell blasted a slap shot from the blue line that Turco stopped. The rebound bounced right to Jan Bulis, who shot it off the post and then the puck pinballed under Turco to stop play.

Dallas had their best chance of the period just as time expired. Eriksson received a quick pass from Nagy at the left post and had his backhand stuff attempt roll under a sprawling Luongo as the buzzer went off.

Dallas completed a stretch where they played seven of eight at home with a 5-1-1 record, and now head on the road for a quick trip to the state of Florida, starting with a matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night (6:30 pm, VERSUS). That game starts a grind where they will have three games in four nights and four in six.
