Sabres' Afinogenov leaves with injury in first period

Quote:
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Maxim Afinogenov, the Buffalo Sabres' leading scorer, was knocked out of the game against Toronto in the first period Saturday night with an upper body injury.

He played five shifts, totaling nearly four minutes, before heading to the dressing room. The Sabres ruled him out for the rest of the game.

Afinogenov, with eight goals and 11 assists, entered the night tied with Atlanta's Marian Hossa for second in scoring in the NHL. He had points in nine of Buffalo's first 13 contests and was on a three-game scoring streak before Saturday's game against the Maple Leafs.

He led the Sabres last season with a career-high 73 points, including 51 assists.

Lindy Ruff said in his post game interview that he was out for "a while".

Tough break. While we're on the topic of sabres injuries can any of you give me an update on Connolly? Haven't heard anything for a while. Thanks.

Connoly was just put on the long term injured list. looks like he won't be back anytime soon. As for afiniganov I'm not to upset. He doesn't back check, just sits at centre waiting for passes. I'm not much of a fan of his.

That really sucks.. It seems like we always lose an important player when we're on a good streak. Bleh.

Disappointed in the announcers of that game. Watched the game they didn't even mention it. Didn't know until way after it happened.

If the information isn't made available they can't report it. When Trevor Letowski got that concussion against the penguins they didn't really say anything, the seriousness isn't always known right away and they don't always want to give the details immediately either. Some teams like to take time before releasing a report.

Its fine that they didnt announce an injury or how serious it was. But they never even mentioned a change in lines or even a "Hey, wheres Afinogenov? Xxxx is taking his place it seems." or a "Still no sign of Afinogenov at XXX time in the game."
