Sale of Predators gets League OK

John Kreiser | NHL.com columnist
Nov 29, 2007,
The National Hockey League's Board of Governors on Thursday approved the proposed sale of the Nashville Predators to a group headed by Nashville businessman David Freeman. The approval, voted at the League meetings in Pebble Beach, Calif., was forwarded pending the closing of the proposed transaction, which could take place within the next few days.

The group made an offer to owner Craig Leipold after he originally announced a deal to sell his team in May to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie for $220 million. Balsillie's deal fell through in June.

Leipold has said he’s lost $70 million since starting the team, and Freeman’s group has sought lease conditions at the Sommet Center that would the new owners a better chance of turning a profit.

All but two of the group's nine members are from Nashville.
