Senators acquire Comrie from Coyotes

I am not a Sens fan. So I can't really comment on this move but thought I would post for the Sens fans.

The Ottawa Senators acquired center Mike Comrie from the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday for suspended Russian prospect Alexei Kaigorodov.

Comrie is earning $3 million this season and will be an unrestricted free agent July 1. He has 20 points (seven goals) in 24 games with the Coyotes this season.

With top two centers Jason Spezza and Mike Fisher out with knee injuries, Senators general manager John Muckler had been trying to find help. He attempted to acquire Petr Nedved off re-entry waivers from Philadelphia but Edmonton beat him to it Tuesday.

Comrie was the next option and it cost the team Kaigorodov, a 23-year-old center who left the Senators for Russia earlier this season after refusing an AHL assignment. The Senators subsequently suspended him.

The Coyotes already have a suspended Russian forward in Enver Lisin, who failed to report to Phoenix's AHL affiliate in late November and went home to Russia.

In six NHL seasons, Comrie has 110 goals and 127 assists with Edmonton, Philadelphia and Phoenix. He was drafted by the Oilers in the third round, 91st overall, of the 1999 NHL entry draft. He had a career-high 60 points in 2001-02 with the Oilers and last season with the Coyotes.

Well, they needed a center, so Comrie will probably pplay top line till Spezza is back. Alexei Kaigorodov is a bit of a risky prospect because he plays in russia, and may not come over to NA Soon. If he comes over next year, he could probably make the Coyotes squad.

I was surprised- Comrie just got in yesterday, and I'm almost sure that I saw him playing when the Sens were on the powerplay- that's showing some confidence in his ability!

RE: Senators acquire Comrie from Coyotes

Comrie I thought had an excellent game last night vs Buffalo. In the first period when Buffalo was dominating the play, Comrie easily was one of the better players on the ice for the Sens.

He was definatly a good pickup for the Sens. With trading away Kaigdorov both teams should have success. Ottawas success from the deal should come now, while the Coyotes should have theirs within 2-3 years.

Kaigdorov was good, but was slacking alot. Also he wasnt dedicated to the Sens when he wouldnt take his role down in Bingo. Best of luck to him in the future.

Just a note from last nights game:
Comrie had 2 assists
Heatley scored his 6th career hattrick (You guys have to watch a highlight of his shortie)

Go Sens Go!

He got 2 asissts in the win last night. That's a good start for him. I assume he will be a 3rd or maybe 4th line centre once Spezza, Fisher and Vermette are back. They may have to move Vermette back to the wing, it won't make sense to have one of these guys on the 4th line plus they have McAmmond as well.
It was interesting that Comrie was wearing #89. I know that has been his number since he has been in the NHL but no Senator has had a number over 50 since about the 1995-96 season when Pierre Gauthier took over and made everyone who had a number over 40 change it to a lower one. Since then players who got called up for short time periods from the minors would wear numbers in the 40s and I think Eaves is the only regular player to wear a number over 40.
