Senators sign Fisher to extension
Senators sign Fisher to extension
It looks as though Mike Fisher won't be going anywhere for a while.
Fisher has signed a five-year, $21 million extension with the Ottawa Senators. Fisher's current contract expires at the end of this season, which will pay him $1.5 million.
Fisher scored 22 goals and dished out 26 assists in 68 games with the Senators last year. In 384 career NHL games Fisher has totals of 92 goals and 100 assists and a +49 rating.
The 27-year-old centre was slated to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2007-08 season. Dany Heatley, Wade Redden and Chris Kelly will also be unrestricted after the season.

RE: Senators sign Fisher to extension
That seems like a lot for a guy who only had 48 points last year but if you see him play every game you know how important he is to the Sens. He is their only skilled guy that plays with any toughness, he is an amazing penalty killer, shuts down other top players as well as anyone in the leahue and can score the odd goal as well.
I don't think the Sens are too concerned with signing Redden next year.

RE: Senators sign Fisher to extension
Fisher on board for 5 more years at 4.2 mill is not a problem for me. Good Signing!
Prediction Time:
Heatley gets signed at beginning of year
Gerber gets traded for a backup goalie and possibly a draft pick
Redden gets traded in a cap move
Forsberg signs with Ottawa (This is a longshot, but still a possibilty)
Spezza signs if he plays well throughout the season.

Solid move by the Sens in keeping one of their top PK guys. Most people balk at that kind of money for someone who doesn't score 30g or 75 points, but try adding the goals he's prevented from being scored and he's a great player. As long as they can move Gerber, I think the Senators will be fine cap-wise. Bryan Murray is an excellent GM and he'll work his magic.
