Senators sign Gerber to multiyear contract; say goodbye to Hasek
Senators sign Gerber to multiyear contract; say goodbye to Hasek
July 1, 2006
OTTAWA (AP) -- Dominik Hasek's time in Ottawa ended Saturday when the Senators signed free agent goalie Martin Gerber away from the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
The signing of Gerber to a three-year deal worth $11.1 million, along with Ray Emery's emergence as a solid goaltender, means the Senators have no need for Hasek, who was told Saturday he would not be retained by the Senators.
"Sure, he's disappointed," general manager John Muckler said of the 40-year-old Hasek. "He was looking forward to coming back. We thought about it a long time. It wouldn't be fair to Gerber to bring him in as maybe the third goaltender.
"I think the two guys we have will be able to work well together.
Hasek, who made $1.5 million last season, was brought in to help Ottawa contend for the Stanley Cup. But the five-time Vezina Trophy winner was injured during the Olympics, and didn't return to the Senators for the rest of the season. That left Emery to backstop the Senators. While he showed flashes of brilliance, it wasn't enough to get Ottawa past the second round.
I think that Hasek for $1.5 M a year is a much better investment than a Gerber (disaster in playoffs) almost $3 M a year. What do Sens fans think of it?

WEll i'm a Sens fan and I think it;s to early to start Downing Gerber.
I have to say I didn't want HAsek back, and i'm not a huge fan of gerber, but he hasn't reely been tested in the playoffs,
There was more reasons he did get pulled, he was sick and lost almost 20 pounds, I know I wouldn;t be able to play well after losing that much weight.
I also think that if Gerber doesn't play that well again in the playoffs then it is ok, Emery proved this year that he can be a playoff goaile he wasn;t the reason that the sens got knocked out, the wheren;t physical enough and need a more balanced D core.
I also think that 3 years for Gerber is too much. Emery really only needs one more year, mabye 2 before he steps into the #1 spot.

i think it was time for hasek to leave and give him some more time to heal. i think that it's about time for hasek to retire anyways. the older he gets, the more prone he'll get to injuries, my opinion.

Of course Gerber was a disaster in the playoffs. Even the best goalie in the world wouldn't play good if he had a stomach virus and had lost 10lbs. Gerber was on iv before game 1 against Montreal, the only thing that kept him wanting to play was his extreme competitiveness. He was sick and had lost his confidence but by next playoffs you can bet he'll be ready to prove something.
