Senators wanted Khabibulin
The Ottawa Senators appeared to have some interest in Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin on the day of the 2008 NHL Trade Deadline.
According to TSN, Senators GM Bryan Murray offered both of his goalies, Martin Gerber and Ray Emery, to the Blackhawks for Khabibulin and netminder Patrick Lalime.
The team was looking to swap goaltenders, but it didn't appear as if Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon was entirely interested.
Murray was trying to trade Emery for a good portion of the season, but there weren't any takers.
Sources tell TFP the Senators spoke to the Lightning earlier in the year about dealing Emery to Tampa Bay, but the interest was mild.

Not surprising to me...Berger was playing well only at the beginning of the season, but he has not been consistent lately. And we all know about the negativism that Emery brings to the team...

RE: Senators wanted Khabibulin
I was about to come into this thread and say how screwed Ottawa would've been (in terms of cap money in the upcoming seasons) had they acquired Khabibulin and traded Emery + something else for him. But, offering both Gerber & Emery seems like a smart deal for Ottawa, its just that Chicago didn't want to take them both on. Its kind of sad how Ottawa backed themselves into a corner by resigning Emery last year to his current contract and now having Gerber, too.

Signing Gerber was a terrible move.

I agree, but at least he'll be a UFA after next season. I think resigning Emery was a worse move because at least with him you knew what to expect. You could've cut ties with him or traded him for some kind of picks and then gone after a big name goalie after Gerber's contract ends. People thought Gerber could come in and do a good job in Ottawa based on his past performances, but he just isn't consistent enough.

RE: Senators wanted Khabibulin
At least Emery had done something in the league when he was re-signed. All Gerber had done was play well for half a season in Carolina and then sit on the bench to watch his team win the Cup.
