SAN JOSE (Ticker) - The San Jose Sharks on Friday signed left wing Milan Michalek to a six-year contract extension.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Michalek, 22, recently completed his second full season, posting career highs with 26 goals and 40 assists in 78 games. During his rookie season, the Czech native had 17 goals and 18 assists in 81 games.

"Milan defines what a multi-dimensional player should be," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He has size, speed, strength, skill and the drive to not only play, but excel in both ends of the ice. He has gained so much experience in the last few years, both as a player and as a person. We are lucky to have him be a core part of our organization going forward."

Michalek was originally selected by the Sharks in the first round - sixth overall - in the 2003 draft.
