Source: Coyotes hire Rangers' Maloney as new GM
The Phoenix Coyotes have apparently found their man.
A league source said Monday that the team has hired Rangers assistant GM Don Maloney to become its new general manager. The Coyotes are expected to introduce Maloney at a press conference Tuesday.
While specific terms were not yet revealed, the source said Maloney agreed to a multiyear deal.
Both sides have been working on a deal for the past week. Maloney apparently (and wisely) wanted at least a five-year commitment to make the move to the desert. Phoenix ownership must balance any deal they make with Maloney against the four years (and approximately $4.5 million) that they still owe former GM Mike Barnett, who, along with two other executives, was fired in April after the franchise's worst season since it moved from Winnipeg in 1996.
Chicago Wolves GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and Boston Bruins scout John Weisbrod were the other two finalists for the post.
