Steve Downie gets suspended for 20 games
TSN.ca Staff

The National Hockey League has handed down its verdict on the Flyers' Steve Downie.
Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, has suspended Downie for 20-games for his vicious hit on Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond in Thursday's exhibition game.
The Flyers were leading 2-1 when, at the 2:39 mark of the second, Downie skated the length of the ice and took a run at McAmmond, who had just released the puck while circling behind the Flyers' net and was met by Downie coming around the other side. Downie also appeared to leave his feet as he flattened the veteran.
The jarring hit came moments after Downie had been checked into the glass by Ottawa's Christoph Schubert in the Senators' zone.
The 20-year-old prospect gained a reputation at the junior level for some nasty play, but following Thursday's game said the hit wasn't pre-meditated, nor did he intend to go for McAmmond's head.

Downie will miss the first 20 regular season and/or playoff games (in addition to the last Flyers' pre-season game - Saturday vs. NY Rangers) that he is a member of the Flyers' 23-man roster. In the event the Flyers send Downie to the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL, he will be considered automatically inelligible to play pending a review, TSN has learned. AHL commissioner David Andrews will determine whether or not to uphold the NHL's suspension, change it, or throw it out all together.

RE: Steve Downie gets suspended for 20 games
20 games is ridiculous! To see colin campbell say that the fact that Downie was a dirty player in junior had nothing to do with is also ridiculous. They obviously want to make an example of Downie so why don't they just say so. These hits happen all of the time by guys like Neil, Fisher, Tucker and Avery. If the league is going to continue to suspend this way that is fine with me but I have a feeling that if it is an established player there will be nothing close to this reaction. This is more of the league handing down suspensions based on injury than the act.
Funny to see Ottawa fans getting so worked up over this, if it had been Mike Fisher they would be talking about how he is a leader and gritty player.

I will withold judgement until an established player does the same thing and good ol' Colie Campbell gives him a 3 game suspension. That said, I'm sure that a lot of it has to do with the fact that not only is Downie an unproven rookie who needs to be put in his place, the incident occurred in a pre-season game. Pre-season!

I see less of a problem with the fact that it is a pre-season game. These young guys are trying to get jobs and are doing everything they can to make the team.

But by the same token, veteran guys like Dean McCammond don't exactly strain themselves during pre-season games and are thus more vulnerable to incidents like this. Although one could also make the counter argument that maybe veteran players should go all out in pre-season games.

That was a vicous hit! 20 games does sound like too much. 10-15 would've been better, but I'll accept that. McAmmond is a vetren player and hits like that should not be thrown in the pre season! That couldve taken Dean out for half the year, maybe even the whole year.
Hopefully Dean will recover before the season starts!

From my view. Yes it was a head shot. Macammond was admiring his pass with his head down abit. Downie comes headshots him then leaves his feet. People were saying he "Dove" to hit him in the head.
Edit: 10-15 Games is enough.

You can't blame Downie for a veteran not giving it all beacuse they already have a spot on the roster locked up.
