Sundin a Leaf for life?
Hmm...I read somewhere else that he might ask to be traded if the Leafs don't make the playoffs this year...not clear what's happening in Toronto.
GSA
Toronto — Mats Sundin says he wants to be a Toronto Maple Leaf for the rest of his National Hockey League career. And there are others who say this is his final season as a Maple Leaf.
The reason for the contrary opinion is Sundin's contract, which will expire at the end of this season, although there is a team option for next season. But the Leafs will be reluctant to pick up the option because of the salary cap.
Under the cap, the annual amount charged to one player is not his actual salary in that season but the average annual amount of his contract, including bonuses. Thus, if the Leafs pick up Sundin's option for 2007-08, they would be charged $6.33-million (all figures U.S.) under the cap, but Sundin's actual salary will be $4.56-million.
However, there is a chance the Leafs will decline Sundin's option and still keep him next season. While general manager John Ferguson has not made his intentions public, he could refuse to pick up the option and negotiate a new deal with Sundin that would pay him in the $5-million range.

Thus, both sides would win. Ferguson would get a lower cap number and Sundin a larger salary than he would have if the team picked up his option. And it's kosher under league rules.

I can see him staying with the Leafs but I would almost think that the management would have a bigger part in whether they want to keep him or not.

RE: Sundin a Leaf for life?
I heard he was willing to take a salary cut of about $1million next year. I've also heard that if the Leafs aren't in a playoff position come the trade deadline that he might go to Calgary for Phaneuf if Calgary is going to make the playoffs. I think it was Phaneuf but I could be wrong. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't see Calgary trading Phaneuf. He's going to be a GREAT player in the future...hell, he's a great player now and at most, Sundin would be a rental. No way would Sutter make that deal.

I don't think the Flames would be thinking long term. They need more scoring and Sundin could put them over the top if they prove themselves to be a top tier team by march.

Its amazing what a differnt jersey will do to a player
did you like him when he was a duck???
Sundin never played for the Ducks. He was drafted by the Nordiques and was then traded to the Leafs.
