TRADE: Anaheim and St. Louis

TO ANAHEIM
Doug Weight

TO ST. LOUIS
Andy McDonald

Quote:
Doug Weight is on his way to the West coast as the Blues have traded the playmaker to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Andy McDonald.

The 36-year old centre had been struggling this season with four goals and seven assists in 29 games, however he seemed to have a breakout game this past Tuesday against his former club, the Edmonton Oilers where he scored twice and picked up an assist.

The 30-year old McDonald had struggles of his own this season with four goals and 12 assists in 33 games for the Ducks. One of the main factors for his decline is that last year's linemate Teemu Selanne remains in a state of semi-retirement. The Strathroy, Ontario native enjoyed a productive season last year with 27 goals and 51 assists. He was a big factor in the Ducks capturing their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

The Ducks have been attempting to make a move to free up salary for next season after defenceman Scott Niedermayer announced his return last week. The move will free up $2.5 million next season.

RE: TRADE: Anaheim and St. Louis

While it sucks to see Andy go, I'm kind of excited to see if Weight can develop any chemistry with Bertuzzi, as I think that they play pretty complimentary styles.

Of course, the bottom line is that this is a huge deal for the Niedermayer situation. Essentially we got Doug Weight, Scott Niedermayer and future considerations (Selanne) for Andy McDonald. That's a great trade.

Yeah, that's something that's been discussed on the Ducks boards quite a bit. The thing is though, I think that unlike Kariya, Selanne is really a man of his word and he said that if he comes back, it will only be to Anaheim. He loves it in Anaheim:

1. He called it his "happy place."
2. His wife just had a baby, so he's not going to want to either move them all to St. Louis, or be away from her for the rest of the season.
3. The Blues are good this season, but they're not going to win the Cup. Why would Selanne come back if he didn't think the team he was coming back to could go all the way? I know, I know, Anaheim isn't playing like they're going to win the Cup this year either, but keep in mind that Niedermayer hasn't played yet. Not enough importance can be placed on his return.

Isnt he living back in Finland right now?

That's a good question. For some reason I feel like he's in Orange County, but I'm not sure. You could be right. Either way, they keep a home in Orange County and they plan on returning here regardless of whether Teemu decides to keep on playing.
