RE: The Next Great Goalie?
That's true I guess, I just think for Toronto, having a #1 goalie being not Canadian would be realy weird...then again, the fans support Sundin as a captain.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
All Eastern Conference Canadian teams have European Captains which they're behind 100%
But IMO, I think Alex Alud's really startin to show some flare. He stepped up to the challange of taking charge in Vancouver's crease and did a pretty great job filling Cloutier's shoes. He also did pretty good in the World Championships this year as far as I know. He's got size, and he's great on breakaways, I think next year could really develop him into a quality starter.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Difficult question, since it's tough to evaluate if a goaltender will become the next great goalie if he havn't played in the NHL.
I'll go with Tuukka Rask, since he's playing versus men in Europe and he's very talented. The big 6'3 Carey Price have also shown he could dominate one day in the big league. He surely got the tools.
But I'll stick with the guys who have some NHL experience though.
Give me:
Marc-Andre Fleury
Kari Lehtonen
Henrik Lundqvist
Hannu Toivonen

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
I can definitely see Henrik Lundqvist being the next big thing. He has showed lots of strength and composure this year behind a weak NYR defense. Look out Brodeur and Roy ;-)

That's true, the Leafs like sticking with Canadian goalies (Potvin, Cujo, Belfour as of recent). I was worried that Rask would be traded away once they found out that Tellqvist/Aubin might be decent. I figured they were valueing Pogge way more than Rask regardless of the first round selection but I haven't heard anything of Pogge in a while now. Hopefully Rask will be between the pipes in the near future, that'd be nice to watch.
As for who will be the next great goalie, you have to go with Lundqvist. Once Jagr retires on him and the team will be forced to convert to a bit more of a defensive game, it could be tough on him but he looked amazing in his first season. It's a shame he wasn't nominated for Calder but hey, what can you do.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Of current goalies, Ward, Ludqvist, and Miller are all looking solid in making names for themselves in the future. But out of prospects, I'd personally have to take Pogge over Raask. All I know of Raask is that solid quarter final game he played when he turned away 40+ shots, but he didn't really do much against the offensive "powerhouse" of the Canadians. Pogge had a much stronger overall tourney I felt and he has recieved many accolades in the CHL system, so I think the future is much brighter for Pogge as of right now. But as long as Roy is in the CHL taking shots at 18 year olds egos, there aren't going to be many more great goalies coming from there, lol.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
harding is pretty good and i wouldn't be surprised if he's on the team next year sharing time with manny fernandez in goal.
as far as those playing now, i can see ryan miller of the sabres and henrik lundqvist of the rangers getting better and being really good. i could possibly see cam ward from the hurricanes getting better as well.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
I'm just kind of curious what happens with Al Montoya and Pogge. Both guys are talented prospects, but will end up in someone else's shadow (Lundqvist and Rask) who are just as young as they are. I think that they won't get a chance to be a #1 goalie until their late 20's.
Umm yes Rask was great in the world junoirs, but hey was he on the winning team? lol, Rask im sure would be a big help for toronto, but I can't see him being anymore than a Tommy Salo. Pogge on the other hand, he's Canadian!! Keep him in TO as the number 1. I'm sure with the support he will get there he can become a top notch goalie.
Pogge will be lucky to be a starting goaltender in the leauge, he stats are inflated from playing on the calgary hitman, a great defensive team, and too your second comment all i can say is WOW. Hes Canadian, do you think that makes a different because it doesn't, are you implying that Canadians are superior because of where they are born?
Also a underrated young goalie is Cory Schneider, he almost single handely took Boston College to the NCAA final game and he almost stole them the game that they lost 2-1 and he had 37 saves.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
For guys not yet playing consistently in the nhl I'll say Harding and Pogge as my two picks. Out of some of the newer young guys in the nhl I'd say the best are Lehtonen and Ward. I think Lundqvist established himself already as a great goalie.
