RE: The Next Great Goalie?
I think Fleury will be a pretty good goalie, but I think, the world junoirs will always haunt him, and he will never be good in pressure situations.
Lehtonen, has pretty good stats right now, and I think he will do good all season...but I think if they get into the playoffs, he will be just like Lundqvist.
Ward and Miller, I think are good goalies, not great...yet, but good. They may be spectacular in the future, but I think once playoff time rolls around, they will give out the same performance as last year, awesome.
Toivonen, hey what happened to him? supposed to be a starter this year wasn't he? oh wait, he got replaced by Tim Thomas...the guy that before last year you would have said who? I think toivonen is good...but I can't see him being the next great goalie.
Lundqvist I always liked Lundqvist, I followed him when he was with Frolunda, but...I don't think he is going to be the next great goalie, but maybe the goalie who gets nominated for the vezina every year...maybe winning once in his career.
That's my speil, sorry felt the need to.
No one will ever be as good as Peter Ing...haha

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Nobody was really hating on Smith. It was more of a question of whether it is relevant to talk about him in this discussion. There are a lot of guys mentioned that are no where near being the next great goalie. He isn't making his team better, the team is making him look better. Plus look at the teams he has played, he has only played 1 team that would make the playoffs right now.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
So because we didn't come on here oohing and aahing about how great Mike Smith is that makes us haters? It's not like we're saying the guy sucks or anything, just that he's probably not the next great goalie.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Let's see how Smith plays without Dallas' defense, then you might convince me. Its easy to do well behind that team.
exactly the point both me and shane (please correct me if im wrong shane but its what you have implyed to me) that had smith not had Dallas' defense, or been on a non playoff team like columbus or phillie, he would not have the stats he does! plain and simple!
great goalies arent made better by who is around them, they make those around them better! for example i would have considered Luongo a great goalie when he was with florida. he was on a team with defense that was average at best and made 30-40 saves night in night out, and made his defensemen better. Had he not been a panther, pitsburgh and washington would have had a friend at the bottom of the standings!

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Yup, that's what we're saying. Smith's stats right now are a product of the strong defensive corps playing in front of him. Even the forwards on Dallas are good defensively. Put him on a bottom feeder team and he gets lit up nightly at this point. He already may be slowing down a bit. In his last two games he's 1-1 with a 4.21 gaa and a .821 sv%. Stats like that and he still got a win! It takes having a good team in front of you for that to happen.

It's really the same thing for Giguere. Yeah, he is playing very well, probably better than he's ever played, but it's certainly helping him to have a Niedermayer and a Pronger out there in front of you.

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
Kolzig is a great goalie now... he is on a bottom feeder with washington and still keeps them in games and snatches points the caps dont deserve! i think i remember he had more 1 goal decision games than any other tender in the league last season, which is good.. and still put up some deacent stats

RE: The Next Great Goalie?
This is the next great goalie though, as in young goalies and prospects who will be the next big thing. Kolzig is neither young nor a prospect.
